New York Yankees 11-8 Boston Red Sox

In a season marked by inconsistency, the New York Yankees found a way to rally in dramatic fashion, securing an 11-8 victory over the Boston Red Sox in a thrilling extra-innings showdown at Fenway Park on Saturday night.

How it happened

Despite an evening where every Yankees‘ advance seemed immediately countered by the Red Sox, New York managed to outlast their rivals in what could be a turning point for their season. Down to their final strike in the ninth inning, Trent Grisham’s game-tying double and a subsequent three-run surge in the 10th inning propelled the Yankees to a hard-fought win.

The game started with a bang for the Yankees. After Alex Verdugo led off with a long single, Juan Soto and Aaron Judge hit back-to-back home runs, giving the Yankees an early 3-0 lead. This initial burst matched their total runs scored in two previous starts against Kutter Crawford this season. However, Marcus Stroman struggled to maintain the advantage, allowing a solo homer to Wilyer Abreu and subsequent hits that led to a 3-3 tie.

Oswaldo Cabrera’s bizarre home run in the second inning briefly put the Yankees ahead again, but defensive lapses and Stroman’s inability to stifle the Red Sox offense saw Boston quickly reclaim the lead. An Anthony Volpe error and a double steal set the stage for Jarren Duran’s RBI single, and a heads-up play by the Yankees caught Ceddanne Rafaela off third base, providing a momentary reprieve. Yet, Masataka Yoshida’s RBI single ensured Boston ended the inning on top.

Stroman’s rough outing concluded in the fourth inning after allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits. The Yankees’ offense continued to battle back, with Judge’s single in the fifth inning briefly putting them ahead before Tyler O’Neill’s monstrous homer off Michael Tonkin swung the lead back to Boston.

Aaron Judge‘s heroics were crucial throughout, reaching base a career-high six times and consistently setting the stage for the Yankees’ comebacks. His eighth-inning double brought home Verdugo, but Soto’s base-running blunder cost New York a potential game-tying run.

In the ninth, down to their last out, Ben Rice’s double and Grisham’s clutch hit off the Green Monster breathed new life into the Yankees. Clay Holmes, who had struggled in the previous game, delivered a clean bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.

The Yankees capitalized in the 10th, starting with Juan Soto‘s single. Judge’s walk loaded the bases for Austin Wells, whose sacrifice fly pushed New York ahead. Gleyber Torres then delivered a decisive two-run double, extending the lead to 11-8.

Holmes returned for the 10th and, despite a two-out walk to Abreu, induced a game-ending grounder to secure the Yankees’ victory.
