New York Yankees 10-4 Kansas City Royals
Austin Wells’ offensive firepower led the Yankees to a 10-4 win over the Kansas City Royals. Wells broke the game open with a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning and added an RBI double in the eighth, helping to solidify the Yankees’ lead in the AL East.
This victory not only pushed the Yankees past their win total from last season but also extended their division lead to 1 1/2 games over the Orioles, who fell 12-3 in Boston.
Wells Powers Yankees to Victory
Aaron Judge‘s game-tying single off James McArthur set the stage for Austin Wells’ heroics. Wells, displaying remarkable power, launched a 2-1 fastball into the right field bleachers, extending the Yankees’ lead to 7-4.
Wells expressed his excitement following the home run, acknowledging the quality pitches he received and his ability to execute a solid swing. The 404-foot blast marked his seventh home run in his last 37 games, solidifying his role as a key contributor in the Yankees’ lineup.
Wells’ performance has been exceptional since the All-Star break, batting an impressive .301 in his last 37 games. His ability to drive in runs and his consistent presence in the middle of the order have made him an invaluable asset to the Yankees.
Manager Aaron Boone praised Wells’ contributions, highlighting his high-quality at-bats and his ability to deliver clutch hits. Wells’ home run was a testament to his power and his ability to make a significant impact on the game.
Recently promoted from Triple-A, Jasson Domínguez couldn’t help but marvel at Austin Wells’ powerful home run, praising its impressive strength.
The Royals initially took the lead with Hunter Renfroe’s sixth-inning homer, but the Yankees quickly countered with a surge against James McArthur. Gleyber Torres reached on an infield single thanks to a diving stop by Bobby Witt Jr., followed by a walk to Juan Soto, setting the stage for the Yankees’ rally.
Aaron Judge delivered a clutch single to bring in Torres, and Domínguez’s aggressive base running, coupled with Salvador Perez’s throwing error, allowed him to score New York’s first run. Alex Verdugo then launched a two-run homer, temporarily putting the Yankees up 3-2.
Verdugo’s blast was his second since the All-Star break, aligning with Domínguez’s increased playing time in left field. Starting in center, Domínguez chipped in with a hit in four at-bats, while Judge, serving as the designated hitter, couldn’t add to his home run tally.
Yankees Overpower Royals in Offensive Display
The Yankees‘ offense continued to flex its muscles, scoring in double digits for the 13th time this season. Key contributions came from Gleyber Torres, who hit an RBI single in the eighth inning, and Austin Wells, who doubled off the left-field wall to help secure the win.
The Royals jumped out to an early lead behind Salvador Perez’s standout performance. Perez went a perfect 4-for-4, driving in Kansas City’s first three runs. He notched an RBI single in the first inning, taking advantage of a throwing error by Jazz Chisholm Jr., and extended the Royals’ lead with a solo homer in the third.
However, defensive errors cost the Royals, including a mix-up between Torres and Soto on a pop-up that allowed Perez to reach base and continue the Royals’ scoring push.
Kansas City’s road struggles persisted, with the loss extending their losing streak to six games and leaving them 3.5 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central. Despite manager Matt Quatraro’s faith in James McArthur, the Royals’ reliever was unable to quiet the Yankees’ bats.
Carlos Rodón put in a solid start for New York, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings. The Yankees’ bullpen provided crucial support, with Jake Cousins picking off Kyle Isbel, Luke Weaver stranding two runners, and Ian Hamilton finishing the game with a perfect ninth inning.
Royals starter Brady Singer lasted five innings, yielding three runs on five hits as Kansas City fell short once again.
