Juan Soto is no longer a Yankee. In a seismic shift that reshapes the MLB landscape, Soto inked a 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets late last night. With almost twenty hours passed since Soto’s departure, the New York Yankees have already started to pivot. According to the latest reports, relievers are now on their agenda as the front office races against the clock to secure reinforcements for the clubhouse. The urgency is palpable, with the team under pressure to reallocate resources and make moves that can keep them competitive heading into the 2025 season.

With nearly $765 million freed up, the Yankees are eyeing key areas for improvement. Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker has emerged as a primary target. Walker, turning 34 in March, brings a potent mix of offensive consistency and elite defense. Over the past three seasons, he has posted a .250/.322/.481 slash line with 95 home runs and earned three consecutive Gold Gloves. A projected three-year, $60 million deal would fill the void left by Anthony Rizzo’s departure while leaving room for additional moves.

The Yankees are also exploring third base options, with Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado topping their list. While Bregman offers offensive reliability, Arenado’s defensive prowess and leadership could solidify the infield. However, Arenado’s declining offensive numbers and no-trade clause present challenges.

In the outfield, Teoscar Hernandez has caught the Yankees’ attention. Known for his power and consistency, Hernandez’s 134 wRC+ in 2024 makes him a valuable potential addition. Talks remain preliminary, but he could play a pivotal role in reshaping the lineup.

Pitching focus intensifies

The Yankees are also prioritizing their rotation, targeting free-agent aces Max Fried and Corbin Burnes. Pairing either with Gerrit Cole would create a formidable duo at the top of the rotation. However, adding an ace may require trading a current starter, with Nestor Cortes and Marcus Stroman mentioned as potential trade chips.

During the MLB Winter Meetings, General Manager Brian Cashman provided insights into the Yankees’ plans. Notably, he named Caleb Durbin as the frontrunner for second base in 2025, filling the void left by Gleyber Torres, now a free agent. Durbin’s strong 2024 campaign, highlighted by a .287/.347/.466 slash line and record-setting 29 stolen bases in the Arizona Fall League, has positioned him as a top contender.

At the same time, Brian Cashman also said Caleb Durbin is the " odds-on favorite" at 2B, though future moves could impact how the #Yankees align their infield.

Durbin’s defensive skills and base-running instincts have drawn praise from manager Aaron Boone, who described him as a “hard-nosed, tough player” ready to make an impact. However, Cashman emphasized that the infield plans remain fluid, leaving the door open for additional acquisitions.

With Juan Soto’s departure, the Yankees face a critical offseason. Their ability to pivot and make impactful moves will determine whether they remain competitive in the AL East and beyond. From pursuing high-profile targets to exploring internal options, the Yankees have an opportunity to leverage their newfound financial flexibility and address roster gaps.

Despite the disappointment of losing Soto, the Yankees’ offseason strategy could lay the groundwork for a stronger 2025 campaign. By seizing opportunities in both free agency and trades, they aim to remain in contention and return to the World Series spotlight.
