Following the Yankees’ 3-1 loss to the Braves this Sunday, manager Aaron Boone addressed the media to discuss the team’s latest developments, including an update on Giancarlo Stanton.

According to Mederith Makarovits of Yes Network, Boone revealed that Stanton has been diagnosed with a “mild” left hamstring strain and has been placed on the 10-day injured list. Despite the setback, Boone is hopeful for a quick recovery, saying, “Hopefully, come here and get us a little spark, especially against left-handed pitching,” referring to the team’s new acquisition, J.D. Davis.

Why did the Yankees sign J.D. Davis?

On June 23, 2024, the Yankees signed with JD Davies.

The Yankees strengthened their roster by acquiring J.D. Davis from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for infielder Jordan Groshans and cash considerations. Davis, a right-handed hitter, was recently designated for assignment by Oakland after posting a .236/.304/.366 slash line with four home runs over 39 games this season. Despite these modest numbers, Boone sees potential in Davis, especially with Stanton sidelined. Davis could provide the team with some much-needed right-handed power, filling in at first base, third base, or as a designated hitter.

In his eight-year MLB career, Davis has compiled a .259/.341/.427 slash line, hitting 72 home runs and driving in 220 runs. His standout season came in 2019 with the New York Mets, when he batted .307 with a .895 OPS, 22 home runs, and 57 RBIs. Boone and the Yankees hope Davis can recapture some of that form to help fill the void left by Stanton’s injury.

Jordan Groshans, the player traded to Oakland, was claimed by the Yankees off waivers from the Miami Marlins in February. The 24-year-old infielder has moved through the Yankees’, Marlins’, and Blue Jays’ organizations during his career. His departure opens a spot for Davis, who the Yankees believe can contribute immediately.

The Yankees are navigating a challenging period with Giancarlo Stanton’s injury adding to their woes. However, the addition of Davis aims to inject some energy and versatility into the lineup. Boone’s comments reflect a cautious optimism that Davis can make a meaningful impact, particularly against left-handed pitching, where the team has struggled.

Stanton’s hamstring strain will keep him out for a minimum of 10 days, but the team is preparing for the possibility of a longer absence. The Yankees are keenly aware of Stanton’s importance to their lineup, as his power and presence are integral to their offensive strategy. In the meantime, the team will rely on Davis and other players to step up and fill the gap.

As the Yankees look to regain their winning form, Boone’s strategic adjustments and the contributions of newly acquired players like Davis will be critical. The team hopes that these changes will provide the necessary spark to overcome their current challenges and remain competitive in the tightly contested season.
