Omar Minaya a known figure in New York baseball circle

Omar Minaya has been a prominent figure in New York baseball circles for many years. He joined the Yankees’ organization at the beginning of 2023, taking on the role of senior adviser to general manager Brian Cashman. Prior to this, the ex-scout served as the Mets’ general manager from 2004 to 2010 and later worked as a special assistant to several general managers in Queens from 2017 to 2020.

Omar Minaya, now 65, has had an extensive career in baseball management. Before joining the Yankees, he served as the general manager of the Montreal Expos prior to their relocation to Washington and transformation into the Nationals. His career also includes stints with the Texas Rangers in scouting and as vice president of baseball operations for the San Diego Padres from 2011 to 2015.

Renowned for his scouting expertise, Omar Minaya was appointed as the Mets’ GM following the 2004 season. His tenure was marked by significant signings such as Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez, which contributed to the team’s NLCS appearance in 2006. Minaya, who was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Queens, also oversaw drafts that brought homegrown talents like Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey to the Mets, players who were instrumental in the team’s 2015 World Series run.

In his current role with the Yankees, Omar Minaya divides his time between the major league club and visiting minor league affiliates, as well as conducting international scouting trips to provide additional insights for Cashman. He is one of three former GMs in the Yankees’ front office, alongside Brian Sabean and Jim Hendry.

Following his time with the Padres, Omar Minaya spent three years as the senior adviser to Tony Clark, the executive director of the MLB Players Association, before returning to the Mets under Sandy Alderson’s leadership.

Prior to joining the Yankees, Omar Minaya also spent a year working for MLB as an amateur scouting consultant, further broadening his experience in baseball operations.
