During the first inning of the game between the New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics, umpire Hunter Wendelstedt decided to show off and be totally partial in favor of the Oakland side. He accused Yankees manager Aaron Boone of saying something from the dugout and ejected him, forcing bench coach Brad Ausmus to take over managerial duties from the very first inning.

The Yankees’ 2-0 loss to the Athletics was a tough pill to swallow, but manager Aaron Boone’s ejection in the first inning added insult to injury. Aaron Boone was ejected by home-plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt after what appeared to be a comment from the crowd or the Yankees’ dugout. Wendelstedt later stated that Boone is responsible for maintaining decorum within the dugout, regardless of the source of the comment. This explanation leaves some wondering if there might have been underlying tension between Boone and the umpire, but there’s no way to know for sure.

In the heated exchange, Boone tried to argue, saying he didn’t utter a word. However, Wendelstedt took the opportunity to demonstrate just how biased and terrible he was by responding dismissively: “I don’t care who said it, you’re gone.”

According to the YES Network broadcast, it seemed a Yankees fan or someone in the crowd wearing a blue shirt may have actually made the comment that Wendelstedt misattributed to Boone. Even with Ausmus pointing out it was likely a fan, the clearly one-sided Wendelstedt still ejected Boone.

“So the fan in the blue shirt is the one who says something to Hunter Wendelstedt — that’s what he reacts to, and he kicks out Aaron Boone, who says, ‘Whoa! I didn’t say anything!’” play-by-play announcer Ryan Ruocco explained.

The New York Post released the pivotal moment during the game. The image clearly shows a supposed fan erupting in a tirade directed at the umpire. In stark contrast, Aaron Boone stands composed.

Wendelstedt’s rush to eject the Yankees manager without properly identifying the source of the alleged comment was an inexcusable display of incompetence and bias against the Yankees organization. His actions marred the divisional matchup and provided another glaring example of the broken relationship and accountability between umpires and teams.

The umpire’s behavior demonstrated an inability to properly manage the game in a fair, impartial manner. Wendelstedt’s bias against the Yankees resulted in them having to play the remainder of the contest without their manager present solely due to the umpire’s poor judgment and vendetta.

  1. Remember a out 2018, 2019 when MLB told the umps to crack down on any noise coming from the dugout. even if they said nothing? But Hunter got it wrong and after seeing the replay. he should have to publish it he messed up. My biggest problem is that MLB has yet to issue a statement on the matter. Yes, I know the game is still going on.
