The latest revamp of MLB Pipeline’s elite 100 prospects unveils a fresh lineup, with a notable addition being none other than Austin Wells, the talented catching prodigy hailing from the Yankees’ domain.
Austin Wells is currently the catcher for the Somerset Patriots, the Double-A affiliate of the Yankees. The 23-year-old luminary has been illuminating the diamond there with his remarkable performances. In a mere 13 games and 53 plate appearances, this southpaw sensation has orchestrated an awe-inspiring melody, orchestrating a symphony of a .264 batting average, a .339 on-base percentage, and a staggering .660 slugging percentage.
Austin Wells has also hit six resounding home runs, three resplendent doubles, and a resolute tally of 18 RBI. His performance catapulted him into MLB Pipeline’s 99th-ranked prospect, solidifying his rightful place in the annals of baseball excellence.
According to MLB Pipeline, Austin Wells’ prowess at the plate has garnered notable attention. It is stated that he possesses a comprehensive skill set, excelling in both average and power-hitting, all the while exhibiting an impressive ability to draw walks. As a left-handed hitter, he demonstrates a keen awareness of pitches and effectively manages the strike zone, resulting in a consistent ability to generate solid contact in all areas of the field. Additionally, the Yankees’ prized first-round choice of 2020 showcases exceptional raw power, which is a result of his amalgamation of strength and bat speed, enabling him to consistently launch the ball into the air with authority.
He had a rib injury earlier in February.
After Brett Baty, the Mets’ third baseman, went from promising prospect to rookie on the big league stage, Austin Wells earned the spot on MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects list. With this impressive feat, Wells has joined the ranks of the highly-rated top prospect for the Yankees, Jasson Dominguez, who now holds the 35th spot on the list.
