New York Yankees 2, Minnesota Twins 11
NEW YORK — The Minnesota Twins beat the New York Yankees 11-2 on Thursday night. Michael A. Taylor, rookie Edouard Julien, and Carlos Correa all hit home runs in the first inning, which led to nine runs.
From the ninth spot in the order, Taylor hit two home runs and drove in four runs.
In seven innings, Joe Ryan (3-0) gave up one run and three hits while striking out 10 batters and not walking anyone. Ryan struck out more than 10 batters for the first time in one of his first 33 starts.
Jhonny Brito (2-1), who had won his first two starts in the major leagues, gave up seven runs and six hits in two-thirds of an inning, which made his earned run average (ERA) go up from 6.75. Minnesota hit three doubles on his sinker, making it a perfect three-for-three.
“Just obviously a rough night,” New York manager Aaron Boone said.
The Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo hit two solo home runs.
Minnesota had lost 13 of its previous 16 games against the Yankees. In the top of the first, which took 28 minutes, it had its highest-scoring inning against New York. The Yankees were the team the Twins scored the most runs against.
Julien, who is 23 years old, had a memorable night with about 25 family and friends there. The Canadian got his first hit in the league to start the first inning. With two outs, he hit a solo home run off Colten Brewer to give his team an 8-0 lead. The ball hit a fan’s hand in the first row, and another fan threw it back onto the field, giving it to Julien.
STATS says that Julien is the eighth player since 1974 to get his first two major league hits in the same inning.
After Correa reached on an infield hit and there were no outs, a video review overturned Nate Tomlinson’s initial call of a forceout at second, allowing two runners to advance.
Last June 9, Minnesota also hit three home runs in a row against Gerrit Cole of the Yankees. Taylor had hit two home runs in a game for Washington for the first time since June 24, 2017.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa, a utility player for the Yankees, gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth, when his fastball reached 74 mph.
Aaron Judge went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts, which ended his career-high 45-game on-base streak. It was the third-longest streak for a Yankee since 1942.
