Gleyber Torres showcased a remarkable return to form in the Yankees’ 8-1 win against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, marking his third consecutive game with two hits. The second baseman has gone 6-for-13 since a two-day benching that followed a 2-for-29 slump.

Expressing satisfaction with his recent performance, Torres emphasized a renewed focus at the plate and drew inspiration from his teammates’ efforts. The Yankees star acknowledged the positive impact of his brief hiatus, during which he concentrated on refining his swing in the batting cage.

“Feels good,” he said. “Just day-to-day and try to be focused every time I go to home plate now. Just enjoy. All my boys give me motivation, because they’re grinding every at-bat. I just want to be part of those at-bats and try to do the little things.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone intended the break as both a physical and mental reset for Torres. He reaffirmed his confidence in Torres’ hitting abilities, noting the quality of his at-bats during the series in Toronto. Boone highlighted Torres’ solid contact, even on outs, as evidence of his improved approach.

“One thing I know is Gleyber can hit,” Boone said. “To my core, I feel like that’s going to happen. He had an outstanding three days of at-bats here. Even today, yeah he got a couple hits, but smoked another ball to center, just missed a ball to right. He’s having the kind of Gleyber at-bats that’s good to see because we need that. Hopefully, he can carry that into the homestand.”

Boone emphasized the importance of Torres’ contributions to the Yankees’ success, expressing hope that this resurgence would continue into the upcoming homestand.

Torres’ turnaround comes at a crucial time for the Yankees as they seek consistent offensive production throughout their lineup to complement their star performers.

Yankees, Blue Jays escape escalation

Tensions briefly flared in Sunday’s game between the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was hit by a Gerrit Cole fastball, and Aaron Judge was struck by a pitch from Kevin Gausman. Fortunately, the incidents did not lead to any further escalation.

In roster moves, the team designated Phil Bickford for assignment following a poor outing on Saturday and called up Josh Maciejewski. Maciejewski’s warm-up during the game initially caused concern about Cole’s status but turned out to be routine. He later pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Additionally, JT Brubaker’s rehabilitation progressed as he was transferred to Double-A Somerset, where he pitched three scoreless innings in his third rehab start.

These developments underscore the Yankees’ ongoing efforts to adjust their pitching staff amid injuries and performance issues.
