Luis Severino will not get the chance to reunite with his former side, as the Mets have effectively canceled any plans for him to play against the Yankees. The ex-Yankees star completed a move to Mets in the current offseason and will be absent in the upcoming Subway Series against his former side.

Recent reports have confirmed that a place in the lineup for Severino will come too soon, ending any hopes of what would have been a news-worthy headline in the New York baseball rivalry.

Andrew Tredinnick of NorthJersey.com further explained that the decision to leave Luis Severino out was made with matchups in mind. The Mets indeed believe that their new man is better equipped to play against the Cubs. As a result, the duo of Sean Manaea and David Peterson are expected to pitch against the Yankees.

Mets boss Carlos Mendoza revealed his side’s strategy on Friday, announcing that Severino will make the starting lineup against the Cubs on Sunday while David Peterson will be the one to feature on Tuesday against the Yankees at Citi Field.

“(Severino’s) like, ‘I’ll do what’s best for the team,'” Mendoza said in a press conference to before Friday’s game in Chicago. “I checked with him a couple of days ago, just to make sure health-wise he was good to go because he’s going to go on regular rest and then talking to Petey, give them our reasons (for) what we were thinking, and they were both on board.”

Luis Severino has been in decent form for the Mets this season. In 14 starts, he has played out a 4-2 record with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. Over 84⅓ innings, he has recorded 61 batters, showing his all-round effectiveness as well. This performance is a significant boost to the Mets’ pitching numbers, as Severino has shown he can be consistent at the top level in that regard throughout the season.
