Monty Monday turned into Gleyber Day as the Yankees beat the Jays

Aaron Boone, manager of the New York Yankees, had one thought as Gleyber Torres approached the plate with the tying run in scoring position.

Torres homered early and then hit a game-tying single in the ninth inning as the Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Monday night.

It’s the longest winning streak in the majors this season, and New York’s longest since a 13-game streak from Aug. 14 to Aug. 27 last year.

For the eighth time since 2003, the Yankees have won at least 17 of their first 23 games. New York has the best record in the majors, going 17-6.

Giancarlo Stanton singled off Yimi Garcia (0-2) to start the New York ninth, snapping the Blue Jays’ four-inning perfect streak. Tim Locastro stole second, but Josh Donaldson grounded out and Aaron Hicks struck out before Torres singled to center field.

Clay Holmes (2-0) earned the win after pitching 1 1/3 innings and Chad Green worked a perfect ninth for his first save in three chances.

Torres opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a two-out, two-run homer off Ross Stripling, his third of the season.

The Blue Jays’ record in one-run games fell to 9-3. In five of its last six games, Toronto has scored three runs or fewer.

With one out in the third, New York had runners at the corners, but Stripling struck out Aaron Judge and got Anthony Rizzo to fly out. Judge had homered in his previous three games and had five in his previous five.

Montgomery faced the bare minimum through three innings, but the Blue Jays tied it in the fourth. Bo Bichette’s RBI double brought George Springer home. Bichette advanced on a fly ball and later scored on a two-out single by Matt Chapman.

To end the sixth, Chapman struck out against Jonathan Loáisiga, leaving Bichette at third.

In the seventh inning, Toronto’s Alejandro Kirk drew a leadoff walk against reliever Miguel Castro, and Tyler Heineman followed with a two-out double, but Holmes came on and got Springer to ground out.

In the eighth, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. singled off Holmes, but Chapman grounded into an inning-ending double play, Toronto’s third of the game.

Montgomery allowed two runs and six hits over five innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five.

Stripling pitched four innings, allowing two runs and five hits. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out three.
