Luis Castillo Defeats the Yankees in His Mariners Debut

In his Seattle debut, Luis Castillo pitched five-hit ball into the seventh inning, and the Mariners used a quick start to defeat Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees 7-3 on Wednesday.

During Seattle’s six-run first inning, Eugenio Suárez, Carlos Santana, and Jarred Kelenic all homered off Cole (9-4). In the seventh inning, Jesse Winker homered off Wandy Peralta, helping the Mariners match their season high for home runs.

In his second start in the Bronx in less than a month, Castillo (5-4) struck out eight batters in six and a third innings. The right-hander walked three batters and gave up three runs.

Castillo (5-4) struck out eight batters in six and a third innings in his second start in less than a month in the Bronx. Three batters were walked and three runs were scored by the right-hander.

Castillo, 29, pitched seven scoreless innings for Cincinnati against New York on July 14. On Friday night, the Reds dealt their ace to the Mariners in exchange for four prospects.

The Yankees were reportedly interested in Castillo, but they acquired right-hander Frankie Montas from Oakland in a trade on Monday.

J.P. Crawford, the shortstop, came up big on defense for Castillo.

Crawford stopped Isiah Kiner-Falefa from scoring from first on Kyle Higashioka‘s double with a strong relay throw. Crawford also snagged a 106.5 mph liner by Aaron Hicks in the fifth inning while shifted to the right side of second base.

Castillo struck out 10 straight batters before walking DJ LeMahieu and Josh Donaldson in the sixth. He escaped the jam, however, by striking out Josh Donaldson with a slider and retiring Andrew Benintendi with a liner to second.

Castillo threw 95 pitches in the seventh inning and easily got the first two outs. He gave up a single to Kiner-Falefa before being pulled after Higashioka hit a two-run homer.

When Ronald Marinaccio began warming up, Cole was booed at several points in the first. In six innings, he allowed seven hits, eight strikeouts, and one walk.

This was the second time this season that he allowed three home runs in the first inning. Cole surrendered three consecutive home runs in the first inning and five in total during the Yankees‘ 10-7 victory over Minnesota on June 9.

Suárez homered in the first inning, giving the Mariners a 3-0 lead. Santana followed with his tenth home run, driving a 3-1 fastball deep to right-center field.

Crawford singled after Seattle hit back-to-back homers for the second time this season before Kyle Lewis struck out. Kelenic then made it 6-0 with his first home run since returning from a two-month stint in the minors.
