Following a change in the pitching lineup for the upcoming series, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that Marcus Stroman’s next start has been delayed until Sunday. The extra time is being used to fine-tune his mechanics.
“[Marcus] Stroman’s going to pitch on Sunday instead. Nestor will take the mound tomorrow, and Rodon and Cole will stay on schedule for Friday and Saturday,” Boone shared.
Is Marcus Stroman losing the Yankees’ confidence?
The cancellation of Tuesday night’s game against the Angels, despite the skies being clear at the time, left Marcus Stroman heading to the bullpen for a session instead of taking the mound. He was briefly seen gathering his gear before leaving, signaling a focus on refining his pitches before the expected rain arrived.
As Marcus Stroman worked in the bullpen, Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake was supervising Clarke Schmidt’s live batting practice as part of Schmidt’s ongoing recovery from a lat injury. The Yankees are eagerly anticipating Schmidt’s return, particularly with the recent ups and downs in their starting rotation.
Boone acknowledged Marcus Stroman’s need to make mechanical adjustments, commenting, “He had a solid bullpen session yesterday. We’re hoping he can build on that.” He also noted, “We’re aiming to keep the rotation as stable as possible while giving Stroman the chance to get back on track.”
The attention on Stroman’s bullpen session was a clear sign of its significance. Stroman has hit a rough patch, allowing seven runs in just 2.2 innings in his last outing against Toronto. His recent starts have been inconsistent, with a 6.32 ERA over the past 10 games, and he has struggled to pitch deep into games.
Yankees make adjustments in rotation amid Marcus Stroman’s slump
Given Marcus Stroman’s recent performance issues, the rainout might lead the Yankees to skip his next start altogether. The original plan had Luis Gil starting on Tuesday, followed by Nestor Cortes on Wednesday, and Marcus Stroman on Thursday in the series against the Angels.
After Tuesday’s game was postponed, the Yankees scheduled a doubleheader for Wednesday, starting at 4:05 p.m. Luis Gil is set to start the first game, with rookie right-hander Will Warren called up from Triple-A to start the second game as the 27th man on the roster.
