As the 2023 season draws to a close, the New York Yankees find themselves facing a dilemma with their designated hitter, Giancarlo Stanton. Once an awe-inspiring force at the plate, Stanton’s performance has declined significantly, raising questions about his place in the team’s future plans.

Stanton’s recent slump: Two hits in 35 at-bats and 16 strikeouts

Giancarlo Stanton’s career has been punctuated by moments of sheer brilliance. His ability to launch baseballs into the left-field seats in the blink of an eye is a sight to behold. However, these moments have become increasingly rare, overshadowed by the growing concerns about his performance and durability.

One glaring issue is Stanton’s batting average, which has plummeted below the dreaded .200 mark. This slump has persisted during the numerous games he’s spent on the injured list, often nursing leg muscle strains. In a season where every game counts, his struggles have proved costly for the Yankees.

In a critical game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Stanton had a night to forget, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and contributing to two double plays that squashed potential rallies. His lack of speed on the base paths has also become a glaring weakness, leaving fans puzzled and frustrated.

Over his last ten games, Stanton’s performance has been abysmal, with only two hits in 35 at-bats and a staggering 16 strikeouts. Such a decline in form is difficult to ignore.

While Stanton has generally been a standup guy, his refusal to speak to the media after a particularly poor showing against the Blue Jays spoke volumes about his frustration. Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Stanton’s struggles, attributing them in part to an early-season injury and a failure to find consistent hitting form.

Stanton’s lackluster running and declining performance raise concerns about his future with the Yankees. He is beginning to resemble a right-handed version of Joey Gallo, another former Yankee who was traded away. Unlike Gallo, who brought defensive prowess to the outfield, Stanton’s struggles extend to multiple facets of his game.

Looking ahead to the offseason, the Yankees have several critical decisions to make. Will General Manager Brian Cashman and Manager Aaron Boone return? And, crucially, will they allocate the $51 million freed up by departing players towards the 2024 payroll?

One thing is clear: for the Yankees to maximize their chances of success in 2024 and beyond, they may need to part ways with Giancarlo Stanton. This decision hinges on team owner Hal Steinbrenner, who must weigh the costs and benefits.

As of the end of the 2023 season, Stanton is guaranteed another $128 million over the remaining four years of his massive 13-year, $325-million contract. While the Miami Marlins will contribute $30 million of that sum, the Yankees are still on the hook for a substantial $98 million.

Releasing Stanton outright is unlikely, given the significant financial implications. However, there is a potential avenue for the Yankees to offload some of that financial burden while securing a better fit for the team.

First, Cashman could approach Stanton and propose a reduced role as a part-time player starting in the upcoming season. This may make Stanton more receptive to waiving his full no-trade clause, especially if an opportunity arises to return to his native Southern California.

While the Dodgers may not be interested, the Los Angeles Angels could be a viable destination, especially if they lose Shohei Ohtani to free agency. To sweeten the deal, the Yankees would need to absorb a significant portion of Stanton’s salary, approximately $73.5 million, which equates to a substantial cost-saving of $24.5 million for the organization.

To make the proposition irresistible to the Angels, the Yankees could also include a promising pitching prospect. This approach, though demanding, may represent the best path forward for the Yankees, given Stanton’s diminishing contributions and financial constraints.

In the end, the decision to part ways with Giancarlo Stanton is a challenging one. Still, it’s a decision that must be made if the Yankees aspire to regain their status as a powerhouse in the American League in 2024 and beyond. While the financial implications are substantial, the potential benefits for the team’s performance and future success cannot be underestimated. It’s time for the Yankees to explore all avenues and make a move that is in the best interest of the franchise.
