On Thursday, the slumping New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 9–2. George Springer went 5-for-5, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run second inning against Frankie Montas.
José Berroa (9-5) pitched 6 2/3 effective innings after a pair of rough outings. The right-hander gave up two runs on six hits while striking out nine and walking one.
For the sixth consecutive game, Springer hit leadoff and went 2-for-4 with an RBI before Guerrero’s home run. The five hits gave him his fourth five-hit game of the year.
Following Josh Donaldson’s walk-off grand slam in the Yankees’ 8-7 win over Tampa Bay on Wednesday, New York suffered its 13th loss in 17 games.
The Blue Jays got closer to the Yankees in the AL East by nine games thanks to a double and a sacrifice fly by Alejandro Kirk. Toronto could also get a “wild card” spot.
In the seventh inning, Albert Abreu plated two runs for Teoscar Hernández with a double.
The runs for New York were scored without the ball leaving the infield.
DJ LeMahieu got an infield single, and when Berros dropped the ball and threw wide of Guerrero at first, it allowed Jose Trevino to score from second. The second run was scored by Estevan Florial thanks to a groundout by Aaron Judge.
Montas (4-10), who made his home debut with his wife and other family members, gave up six runs and eight hits in six innings. He gave up six runs for the second time in three starts since being traded from Oakland, which tied his season high.
Springer’s single with two outs gave Toronto a 2-0 lead. Guerrero then hit a 1-0 fastball into the first row of seats in right field, giving Toronto a 5-0 lead.
Guerrero hit a home run that went 362 feet. It was his fifth home run against the Yankees this season. He has hit 13 home runs against the Yankees, and 10 of them have been in the Bronx.
Kirk’s double in the fifth gave Toronto a 6-2 lead, and after Donaldson made an error with his throw in the seventh, Kirk hit a fly ball to the warning track.
After Berros, Anthony Bass struck out Judge with two on. In his first relief appearance, Yusei Kikuchi got two outs in the eighth, and then Jordan Romano finished the game.
