In a land known for its talented MLB players like Shohei Ohtani, Japan has consistently churned out a remarkable crop of athletes. According to recent reports, one of these rising stars has caught the attention of the New York Yankees. But should the Yankees make this move?

As stated by Yahoo Japan the Yankees plan to offer 25-year-old pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto a contract surpassing the seven-year, $155 million deal given to Masahiro Tanaka. This news comes as the Yankees gear up for an offseason that could reshape the franchise’s future. Despite challenges this season, they aim to regain postseason dominance with strategic moves and a strong roster. However, they need to address a significant gap in their starting rotation, with Masahiro Tanaka as their target.

The starting rotation dilemma

While the Yankees boast ace pitcher Gerrit Cole and two-time All-Star Carlos Rodón under contract for the upcoming season, they recognize the pressing need to bolster their starting rotation. To address this concern, the team has set their sights on a rising star, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, currently with the Orix Buffaloes.

Yamamoto, at just 25 years old, is poised to become one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason if he decides to leave the Buffaloes. Yankees’ General Manager Brian Cashman personally scouted Yamamoto during a recent trip to Japan and was treated to a mesmerizing display of pitching prowess when the young right-hander threw a remarkable no-hitter.

The Yankees are not the only team with their sights set on Yamamoto. Rival teams like the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets are also expected to be in the running for his services. However, the Yankees appear ready to make a compelling offer, one that could reportedly eclipse the seven-year, $155 million deal they awarded Masahiro Tanaka. According to Yahoo Japan, this offer could be “significantly” more generous.

Yamamoto’s worth

Such a substantial offer would certainly be justified by Yamamoto’s remarkable talent and potential. With a career ERA of just 1.74 across seven professional seasons with the Buffaloes, he has consistently delivered top-tier performances. Notably, his ERA has remained below 2.00 since 2020, showcasing his consistency and star-quality pitching. As a 25-year-old, Yamamoto is undoubtedly a rising star to watch, and Yankees fans should be excited about the prospect of his potential arrival in the Bronx.

The New York Yankees are poised to make a major statement this offseason by pursuing the young and talented Yoshinobu Yamamoto. With a solid pitching rotation already in place, adding Yamamoto to the mix could be the key to the Yankees’ resurgence as they aim for World Series glory in 2024. The competition for his signature will be fierce, but the Yankees are ready to make a massive offer that reflects the young ace’s undeniable potential. Yankees fans, keep a close eye on this developing story as it unfolds in the coming months.

If I’m the Yankees hierarchy(I wish I was), I’d offer Yamamoto something in the area of what the front office gave Rodon. Hey, maybe $170-175 million and a limited or no trade clause. Come on Cashman/Steinbrenner, grow a pair and get after this kid!

Give him whatever he wants. Cole is the dependable starter we have. I am tired of wasting money on over the hill players like Donaldson and Montas. Also keep bringing up players from our farm system instead of investing in everyone else’s has beens.
