Japanese pitching sensation Roki Sasaki has become the center of attention in this offseason’s MLB free agency market. The 23-year-old right-hander, often described as one of the most intriguing talents in recent years, has officially entered the next phase of his free agency process after being posted on December 9. With a signing deadline of January 23, teams are moving quickly to secure meetings with the young ace.

Roki Sasaki’s free agency has generated significant buzz not only because of his talent but also due to the complex dynamics of his signing process. At just 23, he is subject to MLB’s international bonus pool rules, limiting his contract to a maximum signing bonus of approximately $7.5 million. While this constraint may seem restrictive compared to MLB’s nine-figure deals, Roki Sasaki’s potential makes him one of the most coveted names in international baseball.

In-person meetings between Roki Sasaki and MLB teams are expected to begin shortly, and the competition to land the young star is intensifying. While the Los Angeles Dodgers initially emerged as frontrunners, recent developments suggest a more fluid landscape.

New York’s bid for Roki Sasaki: Yankees and Mets in play

On the right, Brian Cashman, the New York Yankees' general manager, wears a Yankees cap, sunglasses, and a light purple polo shirt while speaking on a phone at a baseball facility.

Despite being seen as underdogs, both the New York Yankees and Mets remain firmly in the race. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed clear intent to pursue Roki Sasaki.

“Sasaki’s intent is to be one of the game’s greatest pitchers on the planet, and we certainly would love to participate in allowing that to happen,” Cashman said. The Yankees have historical ties to Japanese stars like Masahiro Tanaka and Hideki Matsui, which could bolster their appeal.

Meanwhile, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns also indicated a strong desire to land the pitcher.

“We’ll give it our best shot,” Stearns said. “It’s very difficult in these processes to truly understand what a player’s preference is.” With Kodai Senga already anchoring the Mets’ rotation, Sasaki could find familiarity and comfort in joining a team with an established Japanese presence.

But the pitcher likely to give New York a miss

Long considered the likely landing spot, the Dodgers remain aggressive in their pursuit of Sasaki. The reigning World Series champions already boast a star-studded roster featuring Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, adding significant credibility to their recruitment pitch.

However, Sasaki’s agent Joel Wolfe hinted at an alternative path, noting that a smaller or mid-market team could provide a smoother cultural and competitive transition for the Japanese star.

“I think there’s an argument to be made that a small- or mid-market team might be more beneficial for him as a soft landing coming from Japan,” Wolfe remarked during the Winter Meetings.

Amid Wolfe’s comments, the San Diego Padres have emerged as serious contenders. While initially considered outsiders, they’ve become a legitimate threat to secure Sasaki’s services. The Padres’ aggressive front office has a track record of bold acquisitions and could pitch themselves as a team with less media pressure but strong competitive potential.

His agent has already declared that the pitcher is inclined to a soft landing in a mid-tier market. This rules out both the Yankees and Mets and 2024 champions the Dodgers giving the Padres an advantage.

Despite all the speculation, MLB executives acknowledge that predicting Sasaki’s final decision remains a guessing game. His past injury concerns, including shoulder and oblique strains, add a layer of uncertainty, but his immense upside keeps teams undeterred.

“This isn’t something you can practice for,” one executive admitted. “You just have to hope for the best.”

With just over a month remaining until the January 23 signing deadline, Roki Sasaki’s decision could reshape the MLB landscape. His rare combination of skill, poise, and youth has teams lining up for a chance to sign a player some compare to a young Yu Darvish or Shohei Ohtani.

While the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, and Padres remain the primary contenders, MLB’s free agency process has proven unpredictable before. Wherever Roki Sasaki ultimately lands, his arrival promises to be one of the most transformative stories of the MLB offseason.
