Veteran left-hander Rich Hill, 44, remains committed to his plan for a midseason return, drawing interest from the Yankees, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
Rich Hill’s unique strategy
Rich Hill’s strategy to enter the market midseason is unique. Back in August 2022, he mentioned to Rob Bradford of WEEI his consideration of playing only in the second half of the 2023 season. The approach had both personal and professional benefits: more time with family and a better chance of making a significant impact over a shorter season. Additionally, targeting a contending team late in the season would increase his chances of securing a World Series ring.
Despite his plan, Rich Hill signed an $8 million deal with the Pirates at the end of December 2022, playing the early part of the season in Pittsburgh before being traded to San Diego. Unfortunately, the Padres did not make the playoffs. However, the idea of a midseason return remained appealing, as he reiterated to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune in October. By May, Hill confirmed to Ian Browne of MLB.com his commitment to this plan, having turned down offseason offers to stay prepared for the right moment.
Yankees’ rotation struggles
The Yankees could benefit significantly from Hill’s services. Despite a strong rotation on paper featuring Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Carlos Rodon, Marcus Stroman, and Luis Gil, they have struggled with a collective 5.11 ERA since June, ranking among the worst in the league. Gil, recovering from Tommy John surgery, might be better utilized in a relief role with the addition of another starter. With Clarke Schmidt on the IL and yet to begin rehab, Hill would provide needed depth.
The Yankees are set to exceed the fourth and final tier of the competitive balance tax in 2024, subjecting them to a 110% tax rate on any new contracts, including one with Hill. Despite this, Hill could be a key acquisition for the Yankees as they aim to bolster their rotation for a playoff push.
