NEW YORK — Hunter Dobbins made waves with his pitching performance against the Yankees. Now the Boston Red Sox rookie faces scrutiny for a completely different reason — fabricated family history that’s been exposed as fiction.
The 25-year-old pitcher created controversy by claiming his father Lance Dobbins was previously drafted by New York. He went further, stating he’d retire rather than sign with the Yankees due to family loyalty and alleged connections to Yankees icon Andy Pettitte.

Those tales, which intensified the heated Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, have been thoroughly debunked. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman quickly moved to correct the false narrative.
Fictional rivalry narrative emerges
Dobbins told the Boston Herald before facing New York:
“My dad was a die-hard Red Sox fan. And I’ve said it before that if the Yankees were the last team to give me a contract, I’d retire.”
The comment reflected Boston’s traditional hatred toward their AL East rivals. Dobbins escalated matters by claiming his father was drafted twice by the Yankees, signed with the organization, and then traded to Arizona. He also mentioned a friendship with Pettitte.
A New York Post investigation revealed no such draft record exists. Lance Dobbins appears nowhere in official Yankees documentation. Cashman, with the organization since 1986, personally verified that amateur scouting records show no evidence of Lance Dobbins ever being drafted or signed.
Arizona officials, including Joe Garagiola Jr. and Buck Showalter, couldn’t recall the name. Pettitte, when contacted, said he had no memory of Lance Dobbins or any friendship.
Dobbins shifts blame to dad
Hunter Dobbins addressed the controversy before a Tampa Bay game this week. He avoided accepting personal responsibility for the false statements.

“The whole backstory, it was stuff that I had heard growing up and seen pictures of, from my dad,” he explained. “At the end of the day, it’s just from my dad and what I kind of grew my love for the game. I don’t go fact-check my dad or anything like that.”
Despite mounting evidence against his claims, Dobbins maintained the comments weren’t meant to deceive. He said he hasn’t discussed the matter thoroughly with his father but expects future conversations.
“It’s been a bigger deal than it really needed to be,” he added, minimizing the story’s significance.
Cashman delivers swift Yankees response
Cashman treated the matter with appropriate seriousness. With rivalry tensions already high and the Yankees pursuing AL East supremacy, historical accuracy, and respect matter — especially when involving names like Pettitte.
The GM’s public correction reasserted the franchise’s integrity standards. He reminded fans that Yankees history isn’t subject to fictional embellishment.
Cashman spoke directly about the investigation. The comprehensive database search yielded nothing. The organization has zero record of drafting or employing Lance Dobbins.
Performance continues despite controversy
Dobbins remains effective between the lines despite off-field distractions. Sunday’s 11-7 victory over the Yankees featured five innings of work, three runs allowed, and his first career MLB win.
He currently posts a 3-1 record with a 4.20 ERA and 37 strikeouts. Those numbers suggest promise if consistency continues. Dobbins is scheduled to face New York again on Saturday under increased attention.

“This is my first time in the big leagues facing a team a second time, let alone back-to-back,” he said. “So that’s where my focus is, 100 percent.”
The narrative persists despite his attempts to refocus on baseball. His remarks — whether accurate or fabricated — now form part of this legendary rivalry’s storyline.
Yankees maintain focus
This distraction wasn’t what the Yankees wanted, but they’ve handled it decisively. The club leads the American League East behind Aaron Judge‘s MVP-caliber season and improved rotation depth.
Media feuds over invented history represent the last thing they need. Manager Aaron Boone and players haven’t publicly addressed the controversy, choosing baseball over battles.
Internally, Dobbins’ comments likely registered with the team. In this rivalry where every advantage counts, motivation comes from unexpected sources — including fabricated headlines.
Second encounter awaits
Dobbins prepares for his consecutive start against New York under intense pressure. He’ll face not just Judge and the lineup, but fans and media demanding accountability.
The rookie claims composure despite the circumstances.
“It doesn’t faze me,” he stated. “Doesn’t bother me. I love working with the media and everybody here. Everybody’s been great.”
However, in New York, baseball represents legacy and loyalty requires earning. Words carry substantial weight — particularly when challenging pinstripe integrity.
The upcoming matchup will test whether Dobbins can separate his on-field performance from off-field controversy. For the Yankees, it’s another opportunity to respond where it matters most — on the scoreboard.
