The fate of Pete Alonso, the beloved slugger of the Mets, is uncertain amid swirling rumors of his discontent. Despite his official commitment to the Mets for the 2024 season, recent reports suggest Alonso may be open to exploring other playing opportunities.

Sal Licata, the host of SNY’s “Baseball Night in New York,” referenced an industry source claiming Pete Alonso’s potential willingness to explore other options, despite his longstanding association with the Mets. Licata also speculated on possible destinations, including the Cubs and Yankees, citing the credibility of the source that accurately predicted Yoshinobu Yamamoto‘s signing with the Dodgers.

Questions about Pete Alonso’s long-term commitment surfaced in August during trade talks with the Brewers, which reportedly reached “field goal range” before falling through. This signaled that even a three-time All-Star like Alonso might not be entirely off the trading block. While Alonso has publicly expressed loyalty to the Mets, the recent front office shakeup adds a layer of uncertainty.

The new president of baseball operations, David Stearns, has affirmed commitment to Pete Alonso for the upcoming season but has not initiated extension talks. Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, expressed openness to negotiations if the Mets take the initiative.

Drafted in 2016, the now 28-year-old has become a fan favorite, renowned for his infectious enthusiasm and impressive power. However, the uncertainties surrounding his future cast a shadow over the upcoming season. Whether he remains a cornerstone of the Mets or embarks on a new chapter elsewhere remains to be seen.
