The New York Yankees have slotted in J.D. Davis and have decided to play the infielder in the first game against his former side, the New York Mets.
J.D. Davis will take the spot of Oswald Pereza, who was scheduled to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes on Sunday. The Yankees completed a swap deal for the 31-year-old from Oakland Athletics in a deal that saw infielder Jordan Groshans go the other way.
Now a Yankee, J.D. Davis faces former team tonight
J.D. Davis, who boasts an eight-year experience in the MLS, was recording .236 with four home runs and five RBIs in 39 games for Oakland this season. In his career overall, he has a .259 batting average with 72 home runs and 220 RBIs across 633 games with four clubs.
In his four-year stint with the Mets, Davis recorded .278 with 37 home runs and 120 RBIs. He also had a very unique 2019 season where he hit a remarkable 22 home runs and 57 RBIs.
The Yankees are on the lookout to strengthen their offensive department, with first baseman Anthony Rizzo out due to an arm fracture. Giancarlo Stanton is also on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury. Having started 17 times at first base and 11 times at third in the current campaign, Davis is expected to get playing time at both positions.
“Last week I didn’t have a job and all of a sudden I’m back here in New York playing with the Yankees against the Mets,” he said, noting that the A’s mentioned their intentions to focus on youth development.
Regarding the Yankees’ lineup
In other lineup news, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that Gleyber Torres will bat cleanup for the first time this season in tonight’s game against the Mets. This tweak is part of the Yankees’ effort to improve their attacking numbers in the ongoing series.
