Gleyber Torres extension quiet: Yankees’ problem or tactical curveball?
During a recent media session, general manager Brian Cashman wouldn’t budge on potential contract extensions for Gleyber Torres, who is entering the final year of his deal. While confirming the second baseman as the starting second baseman for the upcoming season, Cashman kept mum on any long-term discussions, leaving Torres’ future with the Yankees in limbo.
Cashman stated that there had not been any discussions regarding the matter at that time, adding that it was uncertain what the future held. During last year’s spring training, Gleyber Torres disclosed that he hadn’t been engaged in any discussions with the Yankees regarding a contract extension.
Gleyber Torres expressed a desire for such a move but stated that it was not within his control, mentioning that he had two more years of control and implying that he would have two more opportunities if not traded.
While Gleyber Torres acknowledges trade rumors have swirled around him for several seasons, the Yankees held onto him last year, hoping for a late playoff push. Unfortunately, their efforts fell short, and they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Despite the lack of contract extension talks, Gleyber Torres’ importance to the 2024 team is undeniable. His strong performance last season, coupled with the Yankees’ championship aspirations, makes him a crucial asset. Whether his future lies in the Bronx long-term or not, he needs to deliver on the field and contribute significantly to their World Series pursuit.
