In an exciting Friday night display, Nestor Cortes took a significant stride toward his highly anticipated comeback with the Yankees. The talented southpaw showcased his prowess, delivering a remarkable performance over four innings for Double-A Somerset. Throughout the outing, Cortes demonstrated his mastery, holding the opposing team scoreless, allowing only two hits and a walk while striking out five batters.

This marked Cortes’ second rehab appearance, a testament to his dedication in recovering from a strained left rotator cuff. In his previous outing on the preceding Sunday, the 28-year-old pitcher displayed his skills, recording four strikeouts and allowing just one run during his 2 1/3 innings on the mound.

With each successful rehab outing, Nestor Cortes draws nearer to his triumphant return to the Yankees’ roster. His impressive performances in Double-A Somerset are undoubtedly bolstering the team’s confidence, eagerly awaiting his arrival to bolster their pitching arsenal. The anticipation of witnessing Cortes back in action with the Yankees adds to the excitement surrounding the team’s future endeavors.

Excellent rehab for Nestor Cortes

Friday night saw Nestor Cortes extending his outing, showcasing his pitching prowess by delivering 49 pitches, of which an impressive 36 were strikes. Right from the start, Cortes displayed his dominance, striking out three of the first four batters he faced, setting a strong tone for the game.

Despite his early success, the Yankees’ starter encountered a notable challenge in the second inning when the Bowie team managed to put runners on first and third with two outs. This situation arose due to a combination of a well-executed single and a strategic walk by the opposing batters, putting Nestor Cortes to the test.

Amidst the tension and pressure, Cortes demonstrated his poise and skill on the mound, handling the situation with composure. His ability to navigate through such challenging moments is a testament to his talent and resilience as a pitcher. As Nestor Cortes continues to impress with each outing, the Yankees’ anticipation of his full comeback grows, eager to witness the impact he can make on the team’s performance.

However, Nestor Cortes remained resolute, and he managed to retire the next batter on a groundout, effectively ending the inning without allowing any runs.

From that point on, Nestor Cortes permitted only one additional baserunner, a one-out single in the fourth inning. However, he swiftly concluded his performance by inducing a ground ball double play, demonstrating his effectiveness on the mound.

Cortes expected to return in August

Earlier this week, Yankees skipper Aaron Boone mentioned that Nestor Cortes would probably require one or two additional rehab starts before rejoining the team, and he expressed that he did not foresee implementing a six-man rotation.

Following an impressive All-Star campaign in 2022, Nestor Cortes has encountered difficulties this year, posting a 5.16 ERA and a 1.298 WHIP across 59 1/3 innings in the big leagues before being placed on the injured list on June 8.

However, the blame for his poor outing in the first half of this season goes to his injuries. However, after his recovery, Yankees fans hope for a second return of the Nast Nestor legend. His return may lead to the Yankees withdrawing either inconsistent Domingo German or underperforming Luis Severino from the rotation.
