As spring camp progresses in Tampa, attention has shifted beyond the Yankees’ headline acquisitions to the emerging prospects battling for roster spots. Veteran baseball executive Omar Minaya has been monitoring these developments closely, offering unvarnished insights into the club’s transforming identity. The seasoned scout while talking to YES’ Jack Curry admitted that New York has made substantial strides in athleticism and versatility while facing critical decisions regarding young talent seeking permanent roles in pinstripes.

A more dynamic, athletic Yankees blueprint

Minaya has highlighted the organization’s deliberate pivot toward athleticism, observing that recent roster construction reflects a commitment to creating a more multidimensional lineup. The additions of Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt have introduced a blend of power and discipline, complemented by the youthful energy that Jasson Dominguez, Oswald Peraza, and Will Warren bring to camp.

“We’re going to see a team that’s more athletic, a team that can score from first base on a double,” Minaya said. “They’re focusing more on making contact and putting the ball in play, which should lead to a more consistent offensive attack.”

This tactical adjustment addresses previous campaigns where New York relied excessively on power-hitting but struggled with offensive reliability. Successfully implemented, this approach could position the Yankees as a more balanced contender in the fiercely competitive AL East.

Oswald Peraza: Career crossroads approaching

Former top prospect Oswald Peraza finds himself at a pivotal juncture, fighting for relevance in the Yankees’ infield plans. Though his offensive contributions have underwhelmed expectations, Minaya has detected increased determination from Peraza this spring.

“He’s got an opportunity here, and he knows it. The key is showing consistency, energy, and confidence, both on and off the field,” Minaya said. With no remaining minor league options, this spring likely represents Peraza’s final opportunity to secure his Yankees future.

However, he admitted that Peraza “really hasn’t performed the way” the Yankees have expected him to perform.

The organization requires more than raw ability—they need performers who deliver in consequential situations. Minaya emphasized the importance of positive body language, competitive drive, and capitalizing on opportunities. Failure to seize this moment could leave Peraza outside the organization’s plans.

Jasson Dominguez: Potential lies in development

The 22-year-old Jasson Domínguez continues generating significant buzz, impressing evaluators with his exceptional power-speed combination. The outfielder nicknamed “The Martian” for his remarkable physical gifts has demonstrated flashes of brilliance suggesting cornerstone potential.

“There are moments when you watch Jasson, and you just say, ‘Wow,'” Minaya said. Nevertheless, he acknowledged Domínguez remains a developing talent. “He’s going to have growing pains like any young player. The key is giving him space to improve while ensuring consistent coaching.”

The organization continues evaluating Domínguez’s optimal defensive position. While his offensive ceiling appears extraordinary, consistent production against major league pitching will ultimately determine his long-term trajectory.

Will Warren: Unexpected rotation opening

Pitching injuries have created unforeseen opportunities, with Gerrit Cole lost for the season and Clarke Schmidt battling shoulder discomfort. These setbacks have potentially cleared a path for right-hander Will Warren, a promising prospect who could make an immediate impact.

“Opportunities arise in baseball, and Warren has one now,” Minaya said. “His competitiveness is what makes him stand out.”

Despite inconsistent results in 2024, the Yankees believe Warren possesses both the repertoire and mentality necessary for major league success. Should Schmidt’s shoulder issues persist, Warren might begin the season in the rotation, providing an invaluable chance to establish his value.

Final assessment: Yankees at a turning point

Despite lingering uncertainties, the Yankees appear better positioned heading into 2025. The blend of established veterans and ascending young talent provides optimism for championship contention. The organizational shift toward athleticism and contact-oriented hitting signals a philosophical adjustment potentially yielding improved results.

Minaya maintains a positive outlook regarding the team’s direction. “I feel good about how athletic we are. Now it’s about seeing how well these pieces come together.”

The remaining spring training schedule will prove decisive for finalizing roster decisions. With Domínguez, Peraza, and Warren competing for expanded roles—alongside stabilizing veterans like Bellinger and Goldschmidt—the Yankees may have finally assembled the proper mixture for sustained October success.

The critical question remains whether these developing talents will rise to meet expectations or if further adjustments become necessary before the Yankees fully reclaim their position atop the American League hierarchy.

For whatever their reasoning, Cashman & his gang decided during the first half of the 2022 season that Peraza was no longer worthy of being the next Yankees prospect, and instead of turning around and trading him while he was still a top prospect, they decided to turn him into organizational depth, and only let him play when they needed him to. Peraza currently has a shot only because DJ LeMahieu can’t stay healthy. I wouldn’t bet against DFA Peraza once DJ is deemed healthy.
