Luke Weaver is quickly becoming a game-changer for the New York Yankees, especially after his impressive performances in recent weeks. His most recent standout outing came in a 7-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics this past Sunday, where he once again proved his value.

While Aaron Judge made headlines with his 55th home run of the season, Luke Weaver quietly delivered another key performance that could hint at his future role as the Yankees’ closer.

In Sunday’s game, tension mounted when Clay Holmes entered in the eighth inning to protect a 6-4 lead. Holmes struggled, putting the first two runners on base without recording an out. Aaron Boone quickly turned to Weaver, who struck out two batters to escape the jam and then finished off the ninth inning for a five-out save—his fourth of the season.

Stellar numbers

Since becoming the de facto closer on September 6 in Chicago, Luke Weaver’s numbers have been stellar. In seven games, he’s pitched 10 innings, allowing just three hits and one unearned run. He’s struck out 22 batters while walking only three, compiling a 2-0 record with four saves. Weaver’s ability to handle high-pressure situations has been a revelation, especially considering his inexperience in the role. In fact, his first career save marked a turning point in his season.

With Clay Holmes having blown more than 13 saves this season, Luke Weaver’s recent dominance has sparked conversations about a potential change in the Yankees’ bullpen hierarchy. Weaver’s perfect ERA of 0.00 over his last seven outings, combined with his strikeout ability, makes him an intriguing option to take over as the official closer as the Yankees gear up for the postseason.

Aaron Boone hinted at the possibility of Luke Weaver seeing more chances in the final innings. While it’s too early to declare Weaver the full-time closer, his current trajectory suggests that he could play a key role for the Yankees down the stretch. The team has won 12 games since Luke Weaver stepped into the closer role, and his contributions have been vital during this stretch.

Interestingly, when the Yankees claimed Luke Weaver off waivers, they didn’t expect him to emerge as such a valuable piece of the bullpen. Known for his quirky personality, Weaver has brought a unique energy to the clubhouse, with teammates like Tommy Kahnle and Clarke Schmidt noting his eccentric yet effective presence.

What began as a move for depth has evolved into one of the Yankees’ most crucial decisions. Luke Weaver’s continued success could be a game-changer as the postseason approaches.

Up next

Looking ahead, the Yankees are set to face the Baltimore Orioles after a day off, needing just one more win to clinch the AL East. With Luke Weaver’s newfound role and the Yankees’ momentum, the team is well-positioned as they enter the final week of the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 8 pm EST, and the game will be hosted at Yankee Stadium in New York.
