Yankees rookie right-hander Luis Gil exited Tuesday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians due to low back tightness.

The injury occurred during the fourth inning at Yankee Stadium, where Gil struggled with control and effectiveness.

What happened

Luis Gil’s troubles began in the fourth inning after surrendering a leadoff home run to Cleveland’s Brayan Rocchio. He followed that by walking Steven Kwan, and after throwing a 1-1 pitch to José Ramírez, Yankees manager Aaron Boone and the team’s trainer made their way to the mound. Following a brief discussion, Gil was pulled from the game as a precaution.

The Yankees quickly announced that Luis Gil had been evaluated by an orthopedic doctor at the stadium. While he is set to be reassessed on Wednesday, no further imaging is planned at this time, leaving his status for his next start uncertain.

Reliever Tim Hill was called upon from the bullpen to replace Gil and managed to get the Yankees out of the inning without further damage. Despite Hill’s solid effort, the Yankees couldn’t recover from the early deficit.

Luis Gil’s performance on Tuesday marked one of his less effective outings of the season. Over 3-plus innings, the 25-year-old allowed three runs on three hits, issuing six walks, the second-most in a game this season. His control issues were evident, with his command faltering at key moments. The start came after an extended rest period, as the Yankees had opted for Will Warren to make a spot start last week, followed by a team off day on Monday.

Luis Gil’s departure adds to the Yankees’ growing list of pitching concerns as they push toward the postseason. His condition will be closely monitored, as the Yankees will need all hands on deck during this crucial stretch of the season.

Boone and the Yankees’ medical staff will weigh their options carefully in determining Luis Gil’s immediate future. If the injury proves minor, he could be back on the mound soon, but if it lingers, the team may need to explore other pitching options.

For now, the Yankees will hope that Luis Gil’s tightness is nothing more than a temporary setback. As the team awaits further updates, attention will turn to Wednesday’s game, where the Yankees will look to bounce back and keep their playoff hopes alive.
