David Fry’s walk-off homer hands Yankees tough loss in ALCS

David Fry’s two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning stunned the New York Yankees, as the Cleveland Guardians secured a 7-5 walk-off victory in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS). With two outs, Fry delivered a clutch hit off Clay Holmes, cutting the Yankees’ series lead to 2-1 and preventing New York from taking a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Clay Holmes entered the game for the Yankees in the 10th inning, hoping to close out a 5-5 tie and give New York a commanding 3-0 series lead. However, Cleveland quickly mounted a challenge. Bo Naylor led off the inning with a single and was advanced to second on a bunt from Brayan Rocchio. Steven Kwan then grounded into a fielder’s choice, allowing Naylor to advance to third base with two outs.

With the winning run 90 feet away, David Fry stepped up to the plate. Fry sent a pitch from Holmes over the wall, driving in Naylor and giving the Guardians a walk-off victory. The dramatic homer energized Cleveland’s hopes as they prepare for Game 4, still trailing but now with momentum on their side.

The Yankees lead the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Yankees threaten in extras

Pedro Avila faced some trouble in the 10th inning. After Aaron Judge struck out looking, Giancarlo Stanton drew a one-out walk. The Yankees sent in Jasson Dominguez to pinch-run for Stanton, but Jazz Chisholm hit a grounder to second where Andres Gimenez made a brilliant play to get him out at first. With two outs, the Guardians intentionally walked Anthony Rizzo, putting two men on. The game remains tied at 5-5.

Jhonkensy Noel ties it with a ninth-inning blast

With two outs in the ninth, Jhonkensy Noel crushed a towering home run off Luke Weaver, tying the game 5-5 and breathing new life into the Guardians’ hopes.

Luke Weaver escapes eighth-inning jam

The Yankees are in prime position to extend their lead after a crucial Guardians miscue in the top of the ninth. Eli Morgan entered for Cleveland, and Anthony Volpe drew a leadoff walk. Alex Verdugo then grounded into what should have been a routine fielder’s choice, but with Volpe attempting to advance to third, the Guardians botched the rundown. Jose Ramirez dropped the ball on the tag, leaving the Yankees with runners at second and third and no outs. They now have a chance to add to their 4-3 lead.

Earlier, in the bottom of the eighth, Luke Weaver came through for the Yankees, striking out David Fry with two on and two out to escape a jam and preserve the one-run lead. Weaver had been called upon after Tommy Kahnle stayed in to face three batters. Andres Gimenez grounded out, and Brayan Rocchio flew out before Steven Kwan’s walk set the stage for Weaver’s clutch strikeout.

Now, with one inning to go, the Yankees are in control, leading 4-3.

Just minutes after Judge’s game-tying homer, Giancarlo Stanton added to the drama by launching a go-ahead solo home run, his 14th career postseason blast. Stanton’s homer put the Yankees up 4-3, completing the back-to-back rally against Clase, who had been nearly untouchable during the regular season. The Yankees’ powerful duo came through in the biggest of moments, giving their team the lead as they headed into the final innings.

Aaron Judge ties the game with a two-run blast

Aaron Judge came through in the clutch with a game-tying, two-run home run off Guardians’ star reliever Emmanuel Clase in the top of the eighth inning. The homer, which knotted the score at 3-3, gave the Yankees a much-needed jolt as they looked to stay alive in the postseason. Judge’s shot was met with excitement across Yankee Nation, as fans were once again treated to John Sterling’s signature “All Rise!” call during a crucial moment.

Ian Hamilton exits with injury in the sixth

Yankees reliever Ian Hamilton left the game in the sixth inning after suffering a left leg injury during a play at first base. Hamilton entered the game after Lane Thomas drew a leadoff walk. A grounder to first by Daniel Schneeman was mishandled by Jon Verti, who then threw to Hamilton covering first base. Initially ruled safe, the call was overturned after a Yankees challenge. However, Hamilton injured his leg in the process and had to be replaced by Tim Mayza with a runner on second and one out.

The Guardians capitalized shortly after, adding an insurance run to lead 3-1.

Clarke Schmidt battles, but Yankees still trail

Clarke Schmidt delivered a solid effort for the Yankees despite the team trailing 2-1. The right-hander faced several threats throughout his 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. In the fifth inning, Schmidt navigated around Jose Ramirez’s two-out double before being pulled for Tim Hill. Hill came in and retired Josh Naylor to end the inning, but the Yankees remained down by a run.

Schmidt’s final line—4.2 innings, five hits, two earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts on 78 pitches—reflects his ability to limit the damage, though the Yankees couldn’t regain the lead. Despite his solid performance, the offense was unable to back him up, leaving the Yankees behind as they headed into the later innings.

Clarke Schmidt pitches scoreless fourth

Clarke Schmidt managed to keep the Guardians off the board in the bottom of the fourth inning despite allowing a runner in scoring position. After Daniel Schneemann grounded out to short and Andres Gimenez grounded out to first, Austin Hedges doubled to left with two outs. However, Schmidt worked his way out of trouble as Brayan Rocchio grounded out to first to end the inning. The Guardians maintain their 2-1 lead.

Guardians take the lead with two-run homer

The Guardians struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Brayan Rocchio led off with a hit that glanced off the glove of Yankees first baseman Jon Berti. After Steven Kwan flew out to center, Kyle Manzardo launched a two-run homer to deep right, giving the Guardians a 2-0 lead. It was Manzardo’s first career playoff home run.

Yankees go down quietly in the third

In the top of the third, Matthew Boyd made quick work of the Yankees’ lineup, retiring Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton in a 1-2-3 inning. Soto grounded out to second, while Judge and Stanton both grounded out to shortstop, leaving the Yankees without a hit in the inning.

Clarke Schmidt cruises in the second

Earlier in the second inning, Clarke Schmidt needed only six pitches to retire the Guardians in order. Daniel Schneemann flied out to right, Andres Gimenez grounded out to second, and Austin Hedges grounded out to first, keeping the Yankees’ 1-0 lead intact at that point. However, the Yankees missed a chance to extend the lead as Jose Trevino, who drove in a run, was picked off at first, ending the inning.

Yankees escape unscathed

Clarke Schmidt managed to work out of a jam in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on second and third after Josh Naylor grounded out to first, Steven Kwan and Kyle Manzardo advanced into scoring position. However, Lane Thomas grounded out to third, allowing Schmidt to escape without any damage. The game remains tied 0-0 as we head into the second inning.

Yankees miss an early opportunity

The Yankees missed an early chance to score in the top of the first inning. With two men on base and two outs, Jazz Chisholm struck out looking on a borderline low pitch, allowing Guardians pitcher Matthew Boyd to escape the jam. After the first inning, the game remains scoreless.

Earlier in the inning, Aaron Judge struck out on three pitches for the second out, while Giancarlo Stanton drew a seven-pitch walk. This set up the opportunity for Chisholm, but Boyd ultimately prevailed.

The game got underway with Gleyber Torres drawing a walk off Boyd. Juan Soto’s at-bat started with a pitch clock violation, leading to an 0-1 count. He then lined out to center, where Lane Thomas made a sliding catch.

The live coverage is set to begin at 5 p.m. EST.

Yankees

The Yankees secured their 2-0 series lead in the Bronx with stellar pitching and clutch hitting. The bullpen has been especially impressive, with Yankee relievers combining for a 0.77 ERA over 23 ⅓ innings in this postseason. This dominance out of the pen has helped New York take control of the series, putting them just two wins away from clinching the pennant.

Cleveland turns to left-hander Matthew Boyd, who will take the mound for his third playoff start. Boyd will aim to keep the Yankees’ bats at bay for as long as possible, even if his outing lasts just a few innings. On the other side, the Yankees send right-hander Clarke Schmidt to the mound. Schmidt was solid in his previous postseason start, helping tip the AL Division Series against Kansas City in New York’s favor. He’ll look to keep that momentum going tonight.
