With a lefty on the mound, the Yankees are adjusting their lineup for Game 3 of the ALCS. Jose Trevino and Jon Berti have been inserted into the lineup, replacing Austin Wells and Anthony Rizzo. Giancarlo Stanton will move into the cleanup spot as the Yankees face Guardians left-hander Matthew Boyd.
Austin Wells has struggled in the playoffs, going 2-for-24 with 10 strikeouts, but Aaron Boone kept him in the cleanup spot to maintain a balanced lineup between left-handed and right-handed hitters.
Giancarlo Stanton back in the cleanup role
Giancarlo Stanton, who hit cleanup against lefties throughout much of the regular season, will reprise that role on Thursday. With his bat heating up, the Yankees believe Stanton offers better protection behind Aaron Judge.
Rizzo has been productive in his return after fracturing two fingers, but his absence in Game 3 is likely due to avoiding the lefty-lefty matchup rather than any physical setback. Meanwhile, Jon Berti, who impressed during the ALDS, takes over at first base.
