John Sterling, who has been the voice of the Yankees since 1989, will not only call home games but will also travel for away games. The decision to bring him back was made by Yankees executives and Chris Oliviero, president of Audacy New York, as the team prepares for the postseason. Having Sterling return for this critical stretch feels like a natural move for the franchise, given his deep connection to fans.

John Sterling originally stepped away from the microphone in April, ending a storied career that spanned over three decades. Since his departure, WFAN has used a rotation of announcers, including Emmanuel Berbari, Justin Shackil, and Rickie Ricardo, who shared duties alongside longtime color commentator Suzyn Waldman. The station has not yet announced a full-time replacement for Sterling.

In June, John Sterling spoke about the process of finding his successor on The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman, expressing his satisfaction with the temporary rotation of broadcasters. “I think they’re doing a great job,” Sterling said, adding that he didn’t want to influence the decision of who might permanently take over his role.

Earlier this year, the Yankees honored Sterling with a ceremony at Yankee Stadium on April 20, celebrating his career and contributions to the team’s legacy. Throughout his time in the booth, John Sterling has called seven Yankees World Series appearances, including their most recent championship in 2009 against the Philadelphia Phillies.

As the Yankees push for another deep playoff run, they currently find themselves in a competitive race for a postseason spot. They are half a game behind the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East standings but hold a comfortable lead in the American League Wild Card race. With the team looking to break their World Series drought, Sterling’s return adds an extra layer of excitement for Yankees fans.

John Sterling’s iconic voice will once again narrate key moments for the franchise this October, bringing familiarity and tradition to Yankees broadcasts during their pursuit of another championship.
