The Yankees have a legacy that no other MLB team can match and this played a significant role in Aaron Judge‘s return to their fold. The slugger made a lot of money when he re-signed with the New York Yankees after being a free agent. However, the reigning AL MVP had more on his mind than just how much money he could make in a new deal.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Aaron Judge told all of the teams he met with before making a decision that he “didn’t want to give up his legacy for money,” and that was something that everyone respected. And this gave the Yankees an unmatched advantage, which PinstripesNation has earlier made clear.
Andy Martino of SNY says that Hal Steinbrenner called Aaron Judge after the Yankees got the news that the San Diego Padres too joining the pursuit of the power hitter with a deal worth $400 million and the Giants were putting a team of 30 members to win over the slugger.
Before the call, the Yankees had offered Aaron Judge $320 million over eight years, but Judge told Steinbrenner that a ninth year would be enough to seal the deal. He did a great job with his freedom and even went to San Francisco in full public glare to meet another team, probably to put more pressure on the people in charge of the team in New York.
Jeff Passan of ESPN tweeted that Aaron Judge flew to the winter meetings in San Diego “at the last minute” to choose between the Yankees, Padres, and Giants. People thought that Judge would end up back with the Yankees at the end of this whole situation. He has been with the team his whole career, has led them to the playoffs six times in a row, and had a historic season in 2022.
The Yankees haven’t lost many of their best players, especially when they were at the top of their game. They also had no way to replace his production right away if he signed with another team. That’s why the Giants were destined to lose the race for Aaron Judge.
No one will care what Judge’s real reason was for re-signing with the Yankees if he stays one of the best players in Major League Baseball. In the six full seasons since 2017, the 30-year-old has made the All-Star team four times. In that time, the Yankees have been to the American League Championship Series three times, but they haven’t been to the World Series since 2009.
Fans of the New York Yankees look up to Aaron Judge. They like that the famous person is still living in the Bronx. Many fans of professional sports would like it if athletes were stuck with one team. When athletes and teams stay together for a long time, it’s a special thing. Fans too reacted to his words.
Everyone in the Bronx knows that Aaron Judge is a fan favorite. He is the New York Yankees’ soul and heart. Fans are thrilled that he will be wearing pinstripes for the next nine years.
Time for Aaron Judge to create a lasting legacy
Even though the Winter Meetings are over, the team still has some questions. Now that Aaron Judge is safe, they can work on making the areas that need it most better. Who will play left field is one of their biggest question marks. Judge plays right field and Harrison Bader plays center, but they don’t have anyone to play left. Andrew Benintendi hurt his wrist late in the season, making it hard for them to find a new left fielder.
There have also been rumors that they might sign a starting pitcher in free agency. They have talked to Carlos Rodon and he would fit in well in New York, but he won’t be cheap. The pitcher reportedly wants a contract of $30 million a year for six years.
Now that the Yankees have signed Aaron Judge, it will be interesting to see how they handle the rest of this off-season.
