The Yankees were without Gleyber Torres in Friday night’s game against the Astros. The second baseman couldn’t play because he had tightness in his lower back. Yankees manager Aaron Boone explained that Torres’ back “locked up” on him, and they were waiting to see how serious the issue was.
Torres was supposed to play second base against Houston, but he had to be replaced by the Yankees. There is no much information about his back problem. His absence led the Yankees to put Oswald Peraza in second base. Isiah Kiner-Falefa took over at third base and bat sixth in the series opener.
This is a bit of bad luck for Torres, who has been performing exceptionally well recently. In his last five games, he got 6 hits out of 18 at-bats, hit three home runs, got four runs batted in (RBIs), scored five runs, and received three walks.
Torres has been a significant contributor to the Yankees’ offense this season. He played in 133 games and had a batting average of .270, an on-base percentage of .339, and a slugging percentage of .459. He also hit 23 home runs and had 57 RBIs. Torres is leading the team in several categories, including batting average, on-base percentage, OPS (a combination of on-base and slugging percentages), RBIs, runs, hits, and doubles.
Yankees update on Anthony Rizzo
The third baseman went to New York for a medical checkup while the Yankees were playing in Detroit from August 28 to 31. On September 1st, Manager Aaron Boone revealed that Anthony Rizzo had returned home. He added that they would see him when they got back there and that he would have more information on the situation after September 2.
On August 26th, Rizzo had a batting practice session where he faced pitches from right-hander Luis Gil at the Yankees’ training center in Tampa, Florida. This was the first time he had practiced against real pitchers since August 1, which was the day before he received a diagnosis of cognitive impairment. The diagnosis came after he underwent testing due to his complaints of feeling mentally unclear or foggy.
Based on Rizzo’s statement, doctors think that his problems can be linked back to a collision with Fernando Tatis Jr. of the Padres on May 28. Rizzo is currently undergoing treatment that involves taking supplements and doing video exercises to help him get better.
According to Boone, Rizzo, who was put on the Injured List (IL) on August 3, will have his condition checked on a week-to-week basis. He also mentioned on August 23 that it’s possible for the 34-year-old to come back and play this season. On that day, Rizzo started practicing hitting again, using a tee, and doing batting practice alone on the field at Yankee Stadium.
