The New York Yankees clinched a pivotal series win against the Baltimore Orioles with a 6-1 victory, highlighted by robust offensive play and commanding pitching. This triumph, following Friday night’s heated bench-clearing incident, propelled the Yankees back into a tie for first place in the AL East.

The Yankees’ bats ignited early, tallying four runs in the first inning against Orioles’ starter Grayson Rodriguez. Gleyber Torres gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead with an infield single and rookie catcher Austin Wells delivered a critical three-run homer to set the tone.

In the fifth inning, the Yankees extended their lead as Juan Soto and Aaron Judge hit consecutive home runs. Soto’s 23rd homer of the season soared 426 feet to center field, while Judge’s 34th home run set a new Yankees record for the most before the All-Star break.

Yankees pitcher Luis Gil supported the offensive surge with six strong innings, effectively silencing the Orioles’ hitters.

Played in sweltering conditions at Camden Yards, the game drew a sellout crowd of 44,018. This win marked the Yankees’ first consecutive victory and series win in a month, signaling a potential resurgence as they approach the All-Star break.

Soto highlighted the importance of the Yankees‘ series win, noting it as a crucial step to rebound from a tough stretch. He recognized the team’s persistent efforts despite their struggles, expressing satisfaction with their current performance and looking forward to potentially sweeping the series on Sunday.

“We needed it big-time, to bounce back and get on track,” the slugger said. “It’s part of the game. We were going out there and trying our best, things weren’t going our way. But we keep trying until we find a way. We did a great job today to get the series and try to get the sweep [Sunday].”

Judge pointed out the significance of the improved standings heading into the All-Star break, calling it the most gratifying aspect of their recent victories.

The Yankees had endured a rough patch, going winless in eight series since their last series victory against the Royals from June 10-13. During this slump, they recorded a 6-17 tally, watching their 3½-game division lead evaporate into a two-game deficit behind the Orioles.

However, recent games have shown a turnaround, with the Yankees winning three of their last four contests. They remained focused on playing solid baseball despite Friday’s tension-filled incident involving Clay Holmes and Heston Kjerstad.

With the latest win, the Yankees (58-39) are poised to enter the All-Star break in first place, provided they can complete a sweep against the Orioles (57-38) on Sunday.

Judge praised Wells’ performance, emphasizing its importance in establishing an early lead and boosting the team’s confidence, especially following the previous night’s events. Judge highlighted the significance of Wells’ nine-pitch at-bat against Grayson Rodriguez, which culminated in a 397-foot home run.

Wells, poised for more playing time due to Jose Trevino’s injury, has been a standout, batting .296 with a .922 OPS over his last 24 games.

A handshake rehearsal and a Yankees record

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto rehearsed a new handshake in the Yankees’ clubhouse, with Judge confidently predicting multiple home run celebrations. Their premonition came true in spectacular fashion, helping the Yankees secure their first series win in a month.

In the fifth inning, Soto and Judge hit back-to-back home runs for the second time this season. Soto’s 23rd homer was a 426-foot shot to center, while Judge’s 34th traveled 431 feet to the batter’s eye. After each homer, both sluggers practice the same handshake.

“It’s always great to see that,” Soto said. “We just literally were talking about it this morning. … We were talking about our handshake. We were trying to do it a couple of times today.”

Judge’s blast etched his name in the record books as the first Yankee to hit 34 homers before the All-Star break, surpassing the previous club record of 33 held jointly by Roger Maris (1961) and Judge himself (2022). This feat ties Judge for the seventh-highest pre-All-Star break homer count in MLB history.

Camden Yards continues to be Judge’s playground, with the slugger now boasting 42 career homers against the Orioles – his highest against any team. The ballpark’s left-field modifications have done little to contain him, as evidenced by his 24 homers in just 55 games there.

Soto and Judge’s back-to-back homers marked the second such occurrence for the Yankees this season, mirroring their May 24 performance in San Diego. Their powerful display not only fulfilled their morning’s playful prediction but also showcased the formidable offensive threat they pose as a duo.

“It’s just been fun to watch those two on a nightly basis do what they’re doing in the batter’s box,” manager Boone said. “Both homers — Juan’s, that bullet line drive to center, and then that classic Judgey to the moon that just keeps on going.”
