Yankee Stadium was buzzing with emotion on Sunday as the fans sent a clear message to Juan Soto: “Please stay.”
During the Yankees’ 10-3 win over the Colorado Rockies, the chants rang out, but Juan Soto, who’s become a quick fan favorite in his first season in New York, pointed the fans to the real decision-maker—General Manager Brian Cashman.
Yankees fans beg Juan Soto to stay, but he says it’s up to Brian Cashman
Sunday’s game showed exactly why fans are so desperate to keep Juan Soto around. In the seventh inning, Soto smashed a solo home run that kicked off a thrilling back-to-back-to-back homer spree with Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. It was a moment that highlighted just how dangerous this lineup can be, and why Soto is such a big part of it.
Juan Soto hasn’t wasted any time proving his worth in pinstripes. He’s batting .299 with a .429 on-base percentage, and his 37 home runs and 97 RBIs show just how much of a force he is at the plate. At just 25 years old, he’s already one of the most feared hitters in the game, and fans want him to be part of the Yankees’ future.
But as much as the fans want him to stay, the situation is complicated. ESPN’s Buster Olney reported back in July that there hadn’t been any serious talks about an extension, and that both sides seemed content to wait until the offseason. Juan Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, is known for testing the market, and it’s likely Juan Soto will draw interest from all over the league when he becomes a free agent.
Juan Soto knows his value, and with his age and production, he’s in a strong position. His response to the fans on Sunday made it clear: if the Yankees want to keep him, they’re going to have to make it happen.
For now, though, Juan Soto is focused on helping the Yankees chase a World Series title. With the team holding a slim lead in the AL East over the Baltimore Orioles, every game counts as they head toward the postseason. Whether Soto will be around for another run next year remains to be seen, but for now, he’s giving everything he has to this one.
