Jose Trevino, a catcher for the Yankees, won his first Gold Glove last week. On Friday, he won the Platinum Glove, which is given to the best defenders in each league. Nolan Arenado won this award for the sixth time in a row in the National League.
This makes Jose Trevino the first Yankee in the 12-year history of the award to win the Platinum Glove. Trevino is the first catcher in the American League to win it. He and Cardinal Yadier Molina, who has won it four times, are the only MLB catchers to have the award so far.
The 29-year-old provided the Yankees with a solid foundation at the catcher position with his outstanding glovework. In 820 1/3 innings behind the plate, Jose Trevino saved 21 runs due to his defensive play and led the league with a throwout percentage of 33% of would-be base stealers.
The Platinum Glove award was first given out in 2011. It goes to the best defender in each league, as decided by fan votes. The Platinum Glove is automatically given to all Gold Glove winners.
Jose Trevino’s first season with the Yankees was better than expected. His defense was well-known in baseball, but in 2022, he emerged as the best of the best and also had a surprising clutch bat.
A few days ago, the catcher got the career-first Fielding Bible Award that is given to players with great defense. Trevino ended the season on the top of the AL table with “21 Defensive Runs Saved, 17 Catcher Framing Runs, and a 53.9% strike rate.” This was a first for any New York catcher.
When the Bombers got Jose Trevino on April 2, no one in the MLB was aware that the Bronx had expected to have a star catcher who can win big awards in the off-season. The Rangers traded him for Albert Abreu and Robby Ahlstrom days before the season started.
Jose Trevino’s offensive production was significantly better than expected, despite the fact that he appeared in a career-high number of games (115). The 29-year-old slugger posted a batting line of .248/.283/.388 while also establishing new career highs with 11 home runs, 43 RBI, and a 91 wRC+.
Trevino slashed a clutch .355/.396/.505 in situations where there were runners in scoring position, contributing to the thirty-one runs batted in that way.
How do you rate Jose Trevino? Will he be a star for the Yankees soon?
