The New York Yankees have bolstered their infield depth with a strategic move on the eve of Opening Day. In a confirmed deal on Wednesday, the Yankees secured utility infielder Jon Berti from the Miami Marlins in exchange for outfield prospect John Cruz, as reported by Jon Heyman of The Post.

Jon Berti enhances Yankees’ infield depth

Aged 34, Berti brings versatility to the table, capable of covering third base, second base, and shortstop, while also boasting experience across all three outfield positions. His impressive performance last season, batting .294 with a .748 OPS and tallying 16 stolen bases in 133 games, underscores his value as a reliable asset.

The timing of this acquisition couldn’t be more opportune for the Yankees, as they navigate the absence of DJ LeMahieu, currently sidelined due to a right foot bone bruise. With LeMahieu’s absence likely necessitating Oswaldo Cabrera’s shift into third base duties, Berti emerges as a key candidate to fill the void in various infield positions.

However, the addition of Berti may prompt roster adjustments, potentially impacting the inclusion of second baseman/left fielder Jahmai Jones. Additionally, the futures of outfielder Ben Rortvedt and his catching role remain uncertain, given their lack of minor league options.

Berti, a proficient right-handed hitter, is secured under contract through the 2025 season, providing stability and depth to the Yankees’ infield lineup.

In return for Berti, the Yankees bid farewell to John Cruz, an 18-year-old outfield prospect who spent the previous season showcasing his talent with the team’s rookie Florida Complex League squad.
