Yankees center fielder Jasson Dominguez has officially begun his rehabilitation journey. The highly touted rookie underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in Arlington, Texas.

Dr. Keith Meister reportedly performed the procedure, which typically carries a recovery time of nine to 10 months. While pitchers usually require nearly a year to recover from Tommy John surgery, position players tend to return more quickly. This operation on Jasson Dominguez included the use of internal bracing, a technique that has accelerated recovery for other athletes with torn UCLs, such as Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story, who returned after just seven months earlier this year.

Jasson Dominguez to return in mid- or late-June

As a result of this surgery, Jasson Dominguez is expected to be sidelined until at least mid-June to late July, delaying his return to action through the start of the next season.

Jasson Dominguez, 20, made an impressive debut with the Yankees, appearing in eight games following a call-up on September 1st. During this brief stint, he posted a .258 batting average with three home runs and seven RBIs.

However, concerns arose about his throwing elbow toward the end of his third game on September 3. Despite experiencing discomfort, Jasson Dominguez continued to play for nearly another week before being scratched from the lineup on September 10. Subsequent MRI results revealed the tear that necessitated Tommy John surgery.

Dr. Spencer Stein, a sports orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone Health with experience in Tommy John surgeries, advised caution regarding Jasson Dominguez’s return timeline. While speaking to NJ Advanced Media, he emphasized the importance of finding a balance to avoid the risk of reinjury or lingering apprehension about pain or re-injury when speeding up the recovery process.
