New York Yankees enthusiasts received a positive update regarding the recovery of their highly regarded young outfielder, Jasson Dominguez, who underwent Tommy John surgery in mid-September 2023. While addressing the media at Marcus Stroman’s introductory press conference, General Manager Brian Cashman provided a potential timeline for Jasson Dominguez’s comeback, indicating a possible return “sometime in the summer.”
Four months into his rehabilitation, the 20-year-old, affectionately known as “The Martian,” is making progress according to the planned schedule. Although the timeframe of “sometime in the summer” remains somewhat vague, the Yankees might be adopting a cautious approach akin to the one followed by Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper after his Tommy John surgery in 2022.
Harper, navigating through the injury as a designated hitter, underwent surgery in November 2022 and resumed batting as a DH in May 2023, marking a recovery period of approximately six months. Subsequently, he transitioned back to his natural position at first base after the All-Star break, completing an extraordinary comeback in record time for a position player.
Focus on Jasson Dominguez’s long-term health
If Jasson Dominguez replicates Harper’s recovery timeline, he could potentially be back in action with the bat as early as March. However, Cashman’s reference to the “summer window” suggests that the Yankees prioritize Jasson Dominguez’s complete recovery over an expedited return. This approach is reinforced by the recent acquisitions of Juan Soto, Trent Grisham, and Alex Verdugo, which fortify the team’s outfield depth.
Despite the team’s wealth of talent, Cashman expressed his enthusiasm for welcoming Jasson Dominguez back into the lineup. “We’re going to need him whenever he’s ready,” he asserted.
Before his surgery, Jasson Dominguez showcased promising glimpses, batting .258 with four home runs and seven RBIs, including a memorable first-pitch home run against Houston’s ace Justin Verlander. While his extended absence will be noticeable, the Yankees are committed to ensuring a gradual and successful return for their top prospect, prioritizing his long-term health over a rushed timetable.
