Jasson Dominguez seems to be carrying his Double-A form into the 2023 Grapefruit League. On Saturday, the Yankees lost their first spring training game but the Martian showed his class with the first home run this spring.
The Yankees lost to the Phillies 7-4. But their No. 2 prospect hit Philadephia’s Ben Bowden, a left-handed pitcher, for a solo home run in the fifth inning. It was Jasson Dominguez’s first spring training game with the Yankees and his first home run with the team. The home run went to the right center. The first pitch Dominguez saw was a fastball, which he hit.
Jasson Dominguez, who just turned 20 earlier this month, is the youngest player at the Yankees spring training camp this year. In his first at-bat of the day, the outfielder hit a ground ball to the first base.
When the switch-hitter was an international free agent in 2019, the Yankees signed him to a $5.1 million deal. Jasson Dominguez is still Baseball America’s No. 67 prospect, even though he’s not as hyped up as he once was.
“He had an exciting year last year,” manager Aaron Boone said earlier. “He went from A-ball down here in the Florida State League to High-A then to Double-A. Every step of the way, his plate discipline, his contact quality, all those things went up. He plays a really good center field, athletic, great arm.
“We’re excited about him. Last year was a big stepping stone for him, so hopefully, he continues to build on that.”
Last year, Jasson Dominguez had a good season at all three levels of the minor leagues. In 120 games, he hit .273, had an OPS of .837, and stole 37 bases. He could start the year at Double-A Somerset. If that happens, Jasson Dominguez could help the Bronx Bombers as soon as 2024.
