Michael Kay is thinking about quitting his ESPN job, predicts The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand. He claims that “Kay is seriously contemplating retiring from his ESPN New York show after more than two decades on the air, according to sources.”
Michael Kay’s multimillion-dollar contract with ESPN New York ends at the end of September. There have been talks about extending the contract, but sources say Kay has told ESPN officials that he plans to leave. Many of them think he’s not making it up.
There were earlier reports in NJ Advanced Media that Kay was unable to catch Carton & Roberts, who are dominating the viewership and he was unable to catch them.
Michael Kay, who is 61 years old, has no plans to stop being the voice of the New York Yankees on YES Network. Marchand says that Kay also wants to keep doing the “KayRod Cast” with former Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez on ESPN’s alternate broadcasts of Sunday Night Baseball.
Marchand says that ESPN Radio doesn’t have a plan for Michael Kay’s replacement and Don La Greca and Peter Rosenberg could be part of the new show, if there is any.
But according to Marchand, here are a couple of dark horses to keep in mind. Chris Carlin is one of them. He is well known for appearing on ESPN’s afternoon show, which is also co-hosted by ex-San Francisco star Chris Canty, is another good choice to substitute Kay because he is adored by New York fans and has worked with La Greca and Rosenberg in the past.
Then there’s Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, who is the “white whale.” In 2008, he left WFAN and broke up with Mike Francesa to go to SiriusXM. But Russo’s star is on the rise again because Stephen A. Smith has him on ESPN’s “First Take” every week as a guest. Everyone knows how much the Worldwide Leader likes its talent, shows, and networks to work well together.
