On Thursday, Aaron Boone was questioned about the possibility of the Yankees showing interest in re-signing their former player, Luke Voit. The former Yankees first baseman had made a request and subsequently obtained his release from the Mets’ earlier that day.

Boone smiled as big as Yankee Stadium and said that they would see.

The manager later mentioned that the answer was being misread, but it would make sense if the Yankees brought back Voit after Anthony Rizzo was placed on the 10-day injured list on Thursday due to post-concussion syndrome. He also pointed out that Rizzo’s status is “week-to-week,” and considering that there are not many weeks left in the season, the decision would be reasonable.

The 32-year-old had an impressive performance, hitting 14 home runs in 37 games while playing for the New York Mets’ Triple-A affiliate. Luke Voit joined the Mets in early June on a minor-league deal after being released by the Brewers, where he had a .221 batting average in 22 games.

Luke Voit and the Yankees

Luke Voit had previously played for the Yankees over four seasons, during which he showcased his talent, leading the American League with 22 home runs in the shortened 2020 season. Throughout his Yankees career, he maintained a solid batting average of .271, along with an impressive .883 OPS.

Being 32 years old, Luke Voit represented the Yankees from 2018 to 2021, where he distinguished himself by leading the majors with 22 home runs during the COVID-shortened 2020 season. However, his tenure with the team came to an end when the Yankees acquired Rizzo from the Cubs in 2021, leading to his transfer to San Diego before the 2022 season. Since then, Luke Voit’s journey in the big leagues has been rather unsettled, as he moved from the Padres to the Nationals and then to the Brewers, experiencing limited success along the way.

Luke Voit bounces back with Mets

Luke Voit rediscovered his power hitting while playing for the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate, batting an impressive .264 with 14 home runs and a remarkable 1.058 OPS in 37 games. He had signed a minor league deal with New York in June and showcased his talent during his time with Triple-A Syracuse. Notably, in late July, he made waves by hitting home runs in six consecutive games. On his final game with Syracuse on August 1, Luke Voit added another home run to his impressive tally.

Apart from his performance on the field, Luke Voit also garnered attention for his unique sense of style. He made headlines by donning a sleeveless uniform top that was barely buttoned, without an undershirt.

The Yankees manager mentioned that he had heard that he opted out, but clarified that was the extent of his knowledge, and he hadn’t delved deeper into the matter yet.

Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo replacement

It was noted that Jake Bauers got the starting position at the Yankees’ first base during the game against Houston on Thursday. Boone mentioned that in Anthony Rizzo’s absence, DJ LeMahieu would also have playing time at first base. Additionally, Oswaldo Cabrera was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Boone revealed that the Yankees had contemplated calling up Oswald Peraza to play at third base, which would allow LeMahieu to move to first base. However, they ultimately decided to give Bauers an opportunity at first base, particularly when facing right-handed pitchers.

As per The New York Post, Luke Voit was granted his release with the intention of finding a new team that might provide him with an opportunity for a call-up.

Considering the Yankees’ offensive struggles and the need for a performance boost, there is a possibility that they may consider Luke Voit as a potential solution.

  1. Question. How about a reboot from the days of Rivera, Pettite, Posada, Jeter, Bernie Williams, etc. to the current farm system say Spencer Jones, Austin Wells, Pereza, Cabrera and the youngsters that shined so well in the Grapefruit League?

  2. Volpe is already on the club. Why not add to it. More cost effective immediately and cheaper than the old expensive veterans. Include Kiner Kalefa, Trevino, Hagashioka as part of the reboot. You already have Judge in place. Let him leD this group of youngsters on their way up.

Cheaper than Donaldson, LaMahieu, etc. You have Cole, Rodon, Holmes, Peralta, etc. for the rotation and bullpen

  3. Bringing back voit couldn’t hurt the team. It could give us another weapon on offense with all the guys getting hurt.
