According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the New York Yankees made attempts to bring Gio Urshela back into the fold. However, their efforts ultimately fell short. This insight highlights the team’s strategy of leveraging former players to strengthen their roster and address potential gaps.

“The Yankees made a play for old friend Gio Urshela but he found a starting (Major League Baseball) job with the (Atlanta Braves),” he said.

The pursuit of Urshela underscores the Yankees’ proactive approach to maintaining their competitive edge as they navigate the challenges of a demanding season. The Bronx Bombers aimed to reignite a past connection during this year’s eventful offseason. Despite their strong World Series ambitions, the Yankees recognized the need to bolster certain areas, particularly their infield. To address these concerns, the team reportedly turned their attention to a familiar figure: versatile infielder Urshela.

During his three-year tenure with the Yankees from 2019 to 2021, Gio Urshela experienced a career resurgence. His versatility in the infield, particularly at first and third base, made him an appealing option for the Bronx Bombers as they sought to energize their lineup.

The Yankees have maintained interest in Urshela since his departure, reportedly considering him during last offseason’s free agency. However, Urshela chose to sign with the Detroit Tigers. This summer, New York once again pursued him, recognizing the potential boost he could offer, especially at first base. Unfortunately for the Yankees, the Atlanta Braves secured a deal with the utility player first.

As Urshela approaches free agency again this winter, speculation about a potential Yankees reunion is growing. Given their ongoing need for infield reinforcement and Urshela’s previous success in pinstripes, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Bombers made another attempt to bring him back to the Bronx. A reunion could be mutually beneficial, making Urshela a logical target for the Yankees’ offseason plans.

Gio Urshela is at Yankee Stadium during his tenure with the Yankees in 2021.

The pursuit of Urshela made sense on several levels. His familiarity with the team’s culture and coaching staff would have facilitated a smooth transition, while also potentially shoring up the Yankees’ struggling infield. Given the Bronx Bombers’ underwhelming offensive performance this season, Urshela presented an intriguing option to revitalize their lineup.

Urshela’s time in New York represents the peak of his career, particularly his standout 2019 season, where he posted a .314 batting average, hit 21 home runs, and recorded a 133 OPS+. Playing on a modest one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Tigers before Sunday, the Colombian infielder is set to re-enter free agency at 33. This upcoming offseason could offer the Yankees another chance to consider reuniting with their former infield standout.
