Insider predicts return of Gleyber Torres to Yankees for 2025

After jogging on what should've been a double to left, ending up on first with a single (and getting thrown out at home plate later in the inning), Gleyber Torres was taken out of Friday night's game by Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

The New York Yankees’ decision not to extend a qualifying offer to Gleyber Torres initially fueled speculation about the end of his tenure in pinstripes. While he hasn’t fully lived up to his early career promise, recent indications suggest his return to the Bronx might still be possible.

According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Yankees are taking a cautious approach, opting to evaluate Torres’ market value before making any definitive moves. This strategy leaves the possibility of a reunion on the table, depending on how the offseason unfolds.

“The Yankees are letting Gleyber Torres look around but could consider him later depending on what he finds,” he mentioned.

Torres wrapped up the 2024 season on a $14.2 million contract, serving as the Yankees’ everyday second baseman and a consistent presence in the lineup. Now nearing his 28th birthday, he posted a .257 batting average last season, adding 15 home runs and 63 RBIs. Over his career, the second baseman has hit .265 with 138 home runs and 441 RBIs, numbers that could still attract significant interest on the free agent market.

Despite the Yankees’ decision not to extend a qualifying offer, Gleyber Torres has expressed a willingness to remain with the team. Reflecting on his tenure since joining the organization in 2018, he highlighted his deep ties to New York and his appreciation for his time with the franchise. Acknowledging the business-driven nature of baseball, he adopted a patient outlook as he entered free agency.

“I’ve played here since 2018. I’ve got family here,” he said. “I know everybody in the organization, but at the end of the day, it’s a business and I can’t control that. Let’s see what it’s gonna be the next few months.”

Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman struck a cautious tone regarding Torres’ future at the recent GM meetings. While refraining from detailed assessments of his performance, Cashman acknowledged the second baseman’s potential to attract interest from multiple teams in need of middle infield depth—including, possibly, the Yankees.

As free agency begins, the Yankees face uncertainty at second base, with DJ LeMahieu’s status unclear for the upcoming season. If Torres moves on, the team will likely explore external options to address the position, adding another layer of intrigue to their offseason plans.

Gleyber Torres is expected to pursue a short-term deal aimed at enhancing his market value ahead of future free agency opportunities, with MLBTradeRumors projecting a two-year, $36 million contract for the infielder.

In their analysis, MLBTradeRumors recapped Torres’ career journey, starting as a top prospect for the Cubs before being traded to the Yankees in the Aroldis Chapman deal. They highlighted his impressive MLB debut at age 21, which earned him an All-Star nod, and his 2019 breakout season featuring 38 home runs—bolstered by the unique hitting conditions that year.

While Torres hasn’t fully recaptured his early-career production, his power at the plate has remained consistent, with over 20 home runs in 2022 and 2023. Despite a move away from shortstop due to defensive struggles, he ranks among the league’s more productive offensive second basemen. The report suggested that a stronger performance in 2024 could have positioned Torres for a longer-term deal spanning four or five years.

Torres’ contract outlook remains fluid, with one- or two-year deals appearing most likely. MLBTradeRumors speculated that a two-year agreement with an opt-out after the first season could appeal to the second baseman, allowing him to re-enter free agency at age 29. A one-year “prove-it” deal also remains an option.

The report concluded by revisiting Torres’ early success, including All-Star selections in 2018 and 2019, underscoring his potential to reclaim a prominent spot in the market with the right platform season.
