The New York Yankees have been making bold moves this offseason, but according to insiders, their work is far from over. After securing outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger and left-handed ace Max Fried, general manager Brian Cashman still faces mounting pressure to fortify the team’s infield, particularly at third base.

Before Fried’s official introduction at Yankee Stadium, longtime Yankees announcer Suzyn Waldman shared insights on WFAN about the franchise’s strategic plans. “I love building a team,” Waldman remarked, per Audacy. “They’re not done. I was told by three different people that they’re not done.”

One glaring need remains unaddressed: third base. With Fried now anchoring the Yankees’ pitching rotation, shoring up the infield defense has become a top priority. Waldman didn’t mince words about where she believes the Yankees should focus next. She emphasized that since the team has made a record investment in Max Fried, they must have a legitimate third baseman in position, explaining that Fried’s pitching style typically results in balls being hit to that area of the field.

“They better get a third baseman here,” she stressed. “If you’re gonna spend this money on Max Fried, then you better have a real third baseman standing there because that’s what he does. That’s where the balls go.”

The Yankees’ infield has seen its share of defensive struggles in recent seasons, and adding a capable third baseman would provide much-needed stability. With Fried known for inducing ground balls and fielding his position at an elite level, a dependable third baseman could maximize his effectiveness on the mound.

Her comments suggest the Yankees’ front office is still actively exploring roster upgrades. “This is my favorite thing, which is building a team and not just spending money on a couple of people and going that way. They are not done, I am told. We will see what happens.”

Yankees’ potential options in the market

While specific targets remain speculative, the free-agent and trade markets offer potential solutions. Veteran third basemen such as Matt Chapman, currently a free agent, or trade candidates like Rafael Devers or Ke’Bryan Hayes could be on the Yankees’ radar if they decide to pursue a high-impact addition.

Internal options also exist, though they come with risks. The Yankees could consider moving versatile infielder DJ LeMahieu back to third base or giving prospects like Oswald Peraza a shot. However, relying solely on internal fixes could prove risky for a team with championship aspirations.

Cashman’s willingness to invest heavily in Fried and Bellinger underscores the Yankees’ commitment to contending immediately. Adding a premier third baseman would be the logical next step, solidifying both the lineup and the defense.

Manager Aaron Boone has already expressed optimism about the team’s revamped roster but acknowledged the need for continued improvements. Boone conveyed confidence in Fried’s abilities, emphasizing that his talent and leadership could be transformative for the Yankees’ pitching rotation. Securing a reliable third baseman could complete the team’s transformation into a formidable contender.

With the MLB offseason still unfolding, the Yankees’ next move could be pivotal in shaping their 2025 season. While Max Fried’s arrival has already energized the fan base, the call for an elite third baseman continues to resonate throughout the organization.

As Waldman aptly put it, “They gotta do something at third base. Someone has to be standing over there who knows what they’re doing.” With that clear directive, all eyes remain on Cashman and the Yankees’ front office as they navigate the final phases of a transformative offseason.
