Orioles Waste Big Game from Santander: 2-4, 2 HR

Trevino has become the 1st New York catcher to hit a home run this season with a three-run blast in the 4th inning, lifting the Yankees to a 6-2 victory over the Orioles on Monday.

For New York, Luis Severino pitched six innings and allowed one hit.

The Yankees tried to trade power-hitting catcher Gary Sanchez to the Minnesota Twins in the offseason, and while Trevino & Kyle Higashioka has improved the defense, their slugging percentages remain below.300. Trevino did have a couple of hits on Monday, along with his big home run.

Donaldson, who was acquired in the Sanchez trade, & Anthony Rizzo added back-to-back home runs in the 9th for the Yankees, who managed to win for the 19th time in 22 games. New York (26-9) has a 35-game winning streak that ranks among the best in franchise history.

Baltimore’s only runs came from Anthony Santander’s two home runs, but the Orioles only had one other strike in the game.

Kyle Bradish (1-2) gave up 4 runs and 8 hits in 4 1/3 innings of his 4th career start. He walked three batters while striking out six.

The Yankees left the bases loaded in the 1st inning, and Baltimore blew a lead when Joey Gallo misplayed Cedric Mullins’ flyball for a 3-base error. The Orioles had men on 1st and 3rd with nobody out after a walk to Trey Mancini, and yet Mancini was doubled off 1st when 2nd baseman Gleyber Torres did make a diving catch on Santander’s soft liner.

Giancarlo Stanton‘s RBI double in the third gave New York a 1-0 edge. Trevino’s fly to right hit the pole with 2 on in the 4th.

Donaldson has 3 hits and a walk to extend his on-base streak to 22 matches.

This season, New York’s starting pitchers have given 3 runs or less in 33 of 35 starts.

Santander homered in the fourth inning off Severino (3-0), then again in the ninth inning against Aroldis Chapman.

Rizzo, Stanton, and Aaron Judge, who had the night off, were the Yankees‘ first quartet of batters to reach double figures in homers by the team’s 35th game. For the fourth time this season, New York hit back-to-back home runs, all of which involved Rizzo.

UP NEXT

On Tuesday night, New York’s Jameson Taillon (3-1) will face Baltimore’s Spenser Watkins (0-1). Both pitchers will be rested for five days.
