How a trip to Mexico sparked Yankees fans’ call to end Trevor Bauer’s MLB hiatus

Trevor Bauer, who last pitched in MLB in 2021, remains a divisive figure in baseball. Despite completing his suspension—the longest non-lifetime ban in MLB history—many teams remain hesitant to bring him back. Some Yankees fans, however, speculate that Bauer, a former Cy Young winner, could be a fit for the Bronx Bombers.

In April 2022, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred suspended Bauer for 324 games without pay, citing violations of the league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy. Though the suspension was later reduced to 194 games, the allegations, coupled with Bauer’s outspoken nature and legal battles, have complicated his chances of returning to the majors.

Bauer has vehemently denied all accusations against him. He has not faced criminal charges but has been involved in multiple defamation lawsuits, including countersuits that kept the allegations in the public eye for years. Reflecting on his decision to fight these cases, Bauer admitted, “I realize that kept the allegations front and center. That may have done more harm to my career than good.”

An attempted comeback

After serving his suspension, Bauer pitched in Japan during the 2023 season, posting an impressive 11-4 record with a 2.59 ERA. Now 34, he remains hopeful for a return to MLB, even offering to sign for the league minimum salary. However, no team has extended an offer, and the Yankees appear uninterested, particularly given Gerrit Cole’s past tensions with Bauer during their time at UCLA.

Despite this, Bauer continues to train rigorously at his private facility and has found ways to stay in the spotlight. He recently agreed to pitch for the Diablos Rojos in Mexico, including a start against the Yankees during a spring exhibition. Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the upcoming matchup, saying, “It sounds like he’s throwing the ball really well, so it’ll be good to face a real quality arm.”

Risk vs. reward

Strictly from a performance standpoint, Bauer remains an elite pitcher with a career 3.79 ERA and a Cy Young award on his résumé. Yet, signing him could upset clubhouse dynamics and alienate fans. The Yankees, who have historically prioritized strong team chemistry, likely view the risks as outweighing the potential reward.

While Bauer has expressed regret over some of his past decisions, including his approach to social media and his confrontations with MLB officials, he remains unapologetic about fighting to clear his name. “I spent millions of dollars… fighting for my innocence. Would I have been able to live with myself had I not done it? Probably not,” he said.

Trevor Bauer’s talent on the mound is undeniable, but his off-field controversies have created a seemingly insurmountable barrier to his MLB return. As he continues to pitch in Mexico, hoping for another chance, the reality is that his MLB career may be over. For now, Bauer waits, asking for an opportunity that may never come.
