Greg Bird, drafted to eventually replace Teixeira, tries career reboot in Mexico

Once hailed as the successor to Mark Teixeira and a promising young talent for the New York Yankees, first baseman Greg Bird’s career has been a rollercoaster of high expectations and challenging setbacks. Now, at 31, Bird is embarking on a new chapter in his professional baseball career, signing with the Mexican League’s Charros de Jalisco in a bid to rejuvenate his journey in the sport.

A promising start derailed by injuries

Drafted by the Yankees in the fifth round of the 2011 draft, Bird’s potential quickly became apparent. His 2015 debut season was particularly impressive, stepping in for an injured Mark Teixeira and boasting a .261/.343/.529 slash line with 11 home runs in just 178 plate appearances. However, this promising start was soon overshadowed by a series of injuries that stunted Greg Bird’s progress and sidelined him for significant periods, including a torn labrum that erased his 2016 season and recurring issues that hampered his performances in subsequent years.

Despite brief flashes of his early promise, Greg Bird struggled to maintain consistent form and fitness, culminating in a .197/.287/.371 slash line over his final two seasons with the Yankees. The relentless injury setbacks and inconsistent performances eventually led the Yankees to designate him for assignment after the 2019 season, pushing Bird to the peripheries of major league baseball and into a nomadic minor league existence.

Greg Bird rebooting his career: From Australia to Mexico

In search of playing time and an opportunity to reset his career, Bird ventured to the Australian Baseball League, where he continued to demonstrate his talent and work ethic. Following his stint in Australia, Bird has now signed with Charros de Jalisco, offering him a platform to showcase his abilities and, he hopes, pave the way back to affiliated baseball.

The move to Mexico represents more than just another team for Bird; it’s a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome the adversities that have marred his career. Playing in the Mexican League, Bird is not only battling opposing pitchers but also fighting to reclaim the narrative of his career, aiming to demonstrate that he still possesses the talent and drive that once made him a standout rookie in MLB.
