The New York Yankees have already made waves this offseason with blockbuster moves, including the signing of left-hander Max Fried and the acquisition of closer Devin Williams. However, rumors suggest the Yankees might not be done yet. The latest buzz centers on their growing interest in acquiring Paul Goldschmidt from the St. Louis Cardinals—a move that could pave the way for his teammate, third baseman Nolan Arenado, to follow suit, according to John Denton of MLB.com.

With both players rumored to be on the trading block, the Yankees could potentially transform their lineup by bringing two of the Cardinals’ cornerstones to the Bronx. Here’s a closer look at the potential deals, their implications, and the hurdles the Yankees might face.

Paul Goldschmidt gives Yankees a veteran 1B solution

The Yankees’ renewed interest in Paul Goldschmidt, the 37-year-old former National League MVP, is gaining traction following Christian Walker’s departure from the free-agent market. Walker, who signed a three-year, $60 million deal with the Houston Astros, had been on the Yankees’ radar. With Walker unavailable, Goldschmidt represents an experienced and capable alternative for New York at first base.

Goldschmidt, who starred with the Arizona Diamondbacks before joining the Cardinals in 2019, has a stellar résumé that includes seven All-Star appearances and five Gold Glove Awards. However, his performance has dipped slightly over the past two seasons, raising questions about his long-term viability. Despite those concerns, his presence could provide much-needed stability at first base while bolstering the Yankees’ offense.

One potential sticking point is Goldschmidt’s desire for a multi-year deal, which may give the Yankees pause given his age and recent decline in offensive numbers. Still, his leadership and pedigree could outweigh these concerns, particularly if his arrival helps bring Arenado into the fold.

Nolan Arenado may prove a game-changer

While Goldschmidt alone would be a significant addition, the Yankees’ pursuit of Nolan Arenado could elevate their offseason efforts to a championship level. Arenado, widely regarded as one of the best defensive third basemen in MLB history, has won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves and remains an offensive force. His addition would solidify the Yankees’ infield, allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to move to second base alongside Anthony Volpe at shortstop.

However, acquiring Arenado presents unique challenges. The 33-year-old has a full no-trade clause and has been selective about potential destinations. According to reports, Arenado has expressed a desire to play for a championship contender, which could work in the Yankees’ favor following their American League pennant win in 2024. Additionally, sources suggest Arenado may be more willing to waive his no-trade clause if Goldschmidt is already on the roster, making the two moves inherently connected.

Arenado’s contract, which includes three years and approximately $60 million remaining after accounting for deferred payments and contributions from the Rockies, makes him an attractive target for a team like the Yankees. However, convincing the Cardinals to part with both players in a single offseason would require a substantial offer.

The Cardinals are reportedly entering a transitional phase, with team president John Mozeliak describing 2025 as a “reset” year. This strategy includes shedding payroll and creating opportunities for younger players. Trading established stars like Goldschmidt and Arenado would align with these goals, particularly if the Yankees can offer prospects or salary relief.

Earlier this offseason, the Yankees proposed a deal involving Marcus Stroman for Arenado, but the Cardinals rejected it outright, signaling their reluctance to take on Stroman’s remaining contract. Moving forward, any potential trade would need to address the Cardinals’ desire for flexibility and future assets.

St. Louis is also exploring other moves, including interest in trading closer Ryan Helsley and starting pitchers Erick Fedde and Steven Matz. The team’s willingness to offload key players underscores their commitment to retooling for the future.

Yankees’ ambitions and challenges

For the Yankees, acquiring Goldschmidt and Arenado would be a masterstroke, adding veteran talent to complement reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge. The duo’s arrival would not only enhance the lineup but also provide invaluable postseason experience as the Bombers aim to return to the World Series.

However, executing these deals won’t be easy. Goldschmidt’s multi-year contract demands could complicate negotiations, while Arenado’s no-trade clause adds another layer of uncertainty. Additionally, the Yankees must consider the financial implications of absorbing significant contracts while balancing their roster needs.

The Yankees aren’t the only team interested in Goldschmidt and Arenado. The Arizona Diamondbacks, Goldschmidt’s former team, are reportedly eyeing a reunion. Meanwhile, Arenado, a Southern California native, has expressed interest in playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers, though the Dodgers appear committed to Max Muncy at third base for the time being.

These competing interests highlight the high demand for both players, making it imperative for the Yankees to present compelling offers if they hope to secure their targets.

Paul Goldschmidt expected to choose a team soon. Yankees are interested. Other potential fits include AZ SF SEA and NYM. Pluses: Solid 2nd half of 2024 after uncharacteristic start, excellent overall résumé, great in clubhouse, very short term.

If the Yankees manage to land both Goldschmidt and Arenado, the impact on their roster would be transformative. Their infield would become one of the most formidable in the league, with Arenado’s elite defense and Goldschmidt’s consistency at first base providing a strong foundation.

The moves would also send a message to the league that the Yankees are fully committed to contending for another title. After losing superstar Juan Soto to the rival Mets, adding two proven veterans would reaffirm their status as a powerhouse in the American League.

As the Yankees continue to navigate this high-stakes offseason, the potential acquisition of Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado remains a tantalizing possibility. While challenges abound, the rewards could be monumental, reshaping the team’s lineup and positioning them for another deep postseason run.

For now, all eyes are on the Bronx as fans and analysts alike await the next chapter in this unfolding saga. Will the Yankees pull off one of the most significant trades in recent memory, or will their ambitions be thwarted? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the stakes couldn’t be higher.
