As the New York Yankees evaluate their next move in what has already been a busy offseason, MLB insider Robert Murray has floated an unexpected yet compelling name: Paul Goldschmidt. On the latest episode of the “Baseball Insiders” podcast with Adam Weinrib, Murray discussed why Goldschmidt might be the most viable option for the Yankees over other free-agent infielders like Alex Bregman, Pete Alonso, or Christian Walker.

Expert picks Goldschmidt as Yankees’ best option

Goldschmidt, a 37-year-old first baseman, is coming off a season where he hit .245 with 22 home runs and 65 RBIs. While these numbers are a step down from his 2022 MVP campaign, his proven track record and veteran leadership make him a compelling short-term solution for the Yankees.

“If you look at a Bregman type or a Christian Walker type, they have the qualifying offers attached to them, which could hinder the chances of the Yankees pursuing them,” Murray noted on the podcast. “This, I think, makes Goldschmidt a more intriguing option.”

The qualifying offer system in MLB often complicates free-agent signings, as teams must surrender draft picks if they sign players attached to such offers. This could make a veteran like Goldschmidt, who does not have a qualifying offer tied to him, a lower-risk acquisition.

The Yankees’ need for a reliable bat and a defensive upgrade at first base is no secret. While Anthony Rizzo struggled with injuries and inconsistency last season, Goldschmidt could offer a much-needed stabilizing presence.

“I’m sure having another aging first baseman is not exactly what Yankees fans want to hear right now, but he would be an upgrade over Anthony Rizzo,” Murray added. “I think he’d be a really good addition. Him being in New York, in that ballpark, would be a good thing for him.”

With Yankee Stadium’s short right-field porch, Goldschmidt’s power-hitting profile could flourish. Even in a down year, he demonstrated enough pop to suggest that playing half his games in the Bronx could revitalize his numbers.

Contract hurdles remain

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Goldschmidt is reportedly holding firm on his contract demands, seeking a competitive deal. However, teams, including the Yankees, have so far been hesitant to meet his desired terms.

Goldschmidt’s current market projection points to a one-year or, at most, a two-year contract. This makes him a more flexible option for teams that missed out on securing younger stars like Pete Alonso or Christian Walker.

Other options in play

The Yankees’ infield puzzle extends beyond first base. The team could explore reshuffling its lineup depending on how the market evolves. Jazz Chisholm, expected to play third base, offers versatility and could shift to second base if the Yankees pursue Alex Bregman.

Meanwhile, if Goldschmidt signs, Chisholm and Anthony Volpe could anchor the infield alongside him. This configuration would create a formidable defensive core with offensive potential.

Pete Alonso has been rumored to be moving to the Yankees.

With the Yankees eyeing a return to the World Series after falling short in 2024, front-office decisions this offseason carry immense weight. While younger stars like Alonso and Walker offer long-term appeal, the immediate impact of a veteran like Goldschmidt could be the key to unlocking a more dynamic and consistent lineup.

Murray indicated that the Yankees have numerous possibilities to explore, highlighting the complexity of their current situation.

As the MLB offseason heats up, Paul Goldschmidt has emerged as a serious contender to join the Yankees’ ranks. While questions remain about his contract demands and age, his potential value both at the plate and in the clubhouse could provide the balance the Yankees need.

Whether or not New York pulls the trigger on a deal for Goldschmidt, the decision will signal how aggressively the team plans to pursue championship contention in 2025. With limited time and plenty of competition, the Yankees’ next move could define their offseason — and their future.
