After Aaron Judge’s blunt message to the Yankees, their most outstanding player this season, Gerrit Cole, has also stepped up pressure on the team’s top brass. The ace starter has sought a seat for players on the Yankees decision-making table.

Gerrit Cole wants the Yankees to listen to players as they are set to make an introspection on what went wrong this season. The Cy Young Award probable has put forward the names of Aaron Judge and himself as potential candidates to represent the players before the organization.

“I think the players need to be represented,” Cole said. “Between Aaron [Judge] and I, that will happen.”

Gerrit Cole steps up pressure on Yankees

Before the Yankees’ top officials gathered in Tampa this week to kick off their thorough organizational evaluation, Gerrit Cole admitted that he wasn’t quite sure what to anticipate. Thankfully for the ace, who is on track to secure the AL Cy Young Award, expect the Yankees to let him play a significant role in the process.

Gerrit Cole stated that he believed players should have representation. The pitcher also mentioned that he and Aaron Judge would ensure that this representation for players would take place. Both had held regular meetings with Yankees owner every month to ensure that he remained in touch with the clubhouse dynamics.

In this context, Gerrit Cole was receptive to discovering how the audit might enhance the organization. He explained that the team’s approach always aimed at remaining competitive and constantly improving. He noted that it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the organization believed that a particular move or change would contribute to their improvement and offered valuable learning experiences, that aligned with their philosophy.

Cole mentioned that Boone had the support of both him and the clubhouse, and Judge echoed these sentiments. When asked about what the Yankees lacked this year, Cole highlighted the absence of sufficient depth to overcome significant injuries.

The Yankees have allocated a significant portion of their finances to Gerrit Cole and Aaron Judge, making them the highest-paid players on the team. In response, these two stalwarts of the organization, both in terms of financial investment and on-field excellence, share a deep commitment to the Yankees’ future as they pursue their first World Series championship.

Gerrit Cole’s perspective on the Yankees debacle

The Yankees ace pointed out that the team faced difficulties in coping with the absence of Aaron and Anthony Rizzo. He emphasized that these two players represented significant contributions to their lineup and were talented assets. Additionally, Gerrit Cole noted that overcoming challenges in the rotation had also been a factor in their struggles.

The Yankees suffered a blow on June 3 when Judge collided with the right-field wall at Dodger Stadium, resulting in a torn ligament in his right toe. Shortly before that incident, Rizzo had a collision with Fernando Tatis Jr. at first base, which derailed his season as he experienced post-concussion symptoms and was eventually shut down in August.

“We weren’t able to sustain losing Aaron and Rizzo,” Cole said. “Obviously those are two big chips in [our lineup], and we weren’t able to overcome the rotation challenges. Those are obviously big production spots and really a lot of talent, especially Aaron and Rizzo.”

Gerrit Cole expressed the belief that the team should have performed better in the absence of those players. He felt that as a collective unit, they should have been able to generate more wins even when key players like Aaron and Rizzo were not in the lineup. While acknowledging the importance of those players as essential contributors, he emphasized the need for a stronger overall foundation.

The Yankees headed into spring training with high hopes for their pitching rotation, anticipating it could be among the best in the league. However, only Gerrit Cole managed to meet those expectations. Injuries plagued Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, and Frankie Montas by the end of camp, and when they did return, both Rodon and Severino struggled with ERAs over six.

Nestor Cortes experienced a hamstring strain just before camp began, and while he started the season on schedule, his performance declined, and he believes it eventually contributed to the shoulder problems that prematurely ended his season. Overall, the Yankees’ starting pitchers finished the season with a combined ERA of 4.44. Without Gerrit Cole’s outstanding performance, their ERA would have been a less impressive 5.06 over the course of the season.

Despite Gerrit Cole’s exceptional season, the Yankees failed to find a berth in October’s postseason. As a result, they plan to spend the month conducting a comprehensive evaluation of their organization, focusing on areas like analytics utilization and player health management, with the aim of ensuring that Gerrit Cole and the team will be back in the playoffs next year.

Gerrit Cole acknowledged that the team possessed significant talent and capabilities in various areas. However, he stressed the need for improvement, indicating that they would assess and explore various aspects to elevate their performance.
