The Yankees have resolved their left field dilemma ahead of the American League Division Series against the Royals, set to begin Saturday, with Alex Verdugo emerging as the likely favorite to secure the spot.
During Friday’s batting practice session, manager Aaron Boone, initially secretive about his lineup choices, indicated Alex Verdugo would be the starter in left field. This decision was also confirmed by The Athletic. Many Yankees fans had already speculated that Verdugo was the most logical choice for the role, and Boone’s move has validated those predictions.
Alex Verdugo poised for LF start vs. Royals as fans speculate after Friday’s BP session
Throughout the week, Boone gave subtle hints about wanting to evaluate the left field candidates more during batting practice before making a final call. During Friday’s BP, Alex Verdugo swatted a deep fly ball to left field off Will Warren, which fans have taken as a sign that Verdugo may have a leg up in the competition. The observation was noted by Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, who pointed out Verdugo’s strong showing in the workout.
Jasson Dominguez told reporters he remains uncertain about his role for tomorrow’s game, stating that while he would prefer to have clarity, he is preparing the same way regardless. According to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner, Dominguez is expected to be informed of his role on Saturday morning.
During the week leading up to the Royals series, Boone tested multiple players in left field, including Alex Verdugo, Trent Grisham, and Jasson Dominguez, all seen working out together in left field as recently as three days ago. On Friday afternoon, Boone revealed that he had made a decision regarding the left field position, but had yet to inform the players involved.
Fans quickly speculated that Alex Verdugo was likely Boone’s pick, largely due to his numbers and experience compared to Domínguez. While Jasson Domínguez has shown promise, his time in the majors has been limited. Domínguez made his MLB debut late last season and faced a setback this year due to injury, which sidelined him for much of the current season. Despite the missed time, Domínguez impressed in the minors with a slash line of .314/.376/.880 and 11 home runs. In the majors, however, his production dipped slightly, with a .179/.313/.617 slash line and just two home runs in limited appearances. Given his age—only 21—and the small sample size of his major league play, many see Domínguez as a developing talent rather than a postseason starter.
On the other hand, Alex Verdugo has provided a more consistent, if less spectacular, performance throughout the year, posting a .233/.291/.647 slash line with 13 home runs.
Alex Verdugo also had his share of big moments, such as hitting a home run against his former team, the Red Sox, which ranks among the top highlights of the Yankees’ season. His experience and ability to deliver in key situations make him an appealing choice for Boone and a reason why some Yankees fans believe he should get the start over Domínguez.
As the Yankees wrap up their preparations for the ALDS, it appears that Alex Verdugo could be the one patrolling left field when they take the field against Kansas City on Saturday. Boone has yet to make an official announcement, but the signs are pointing in Alex Verdugo’s direction. Whether this decision will pay off remains to be seen, but Yankees fans are ready to see how it unfolds.
